Russian Imperial Stout - Aged in Thomas Tew Rum Barrels

The beer was designed to have enough roasted bitterness and body to balance out the impacts of the sweetness from the barrel and the pickup of the remnants of rum.

Had on-tap at Home D's in State College, poured into a goblet.

L: Dark, dark brown pour with 2 fingers of tannish head. Falls fast with a small rim of lacing.

S: Roast... dark burned sugars and charred grains. Rum sweetness... boozy.

T/F: Follows the nose. Char and roast.... strong rum barrel presence adds a bit of sweetness to the mix. Mild licorice and oak... some notes of espresso and dark fruits. Rich... mostly smooth and a bit hot. Becomes richer as it warms.

O: A solid rum barrel aged stout. A big sipper of a beer. Well worth trying.

This is my go-to beer at Newport Craft. It’s a bit on the roasty side but one of their better dark beers. Sometimes it’s served too cold but if you let it warm a little there’s a nice sweet/rum flavor to it .

I recently purchased a bottle from the Rhode Island brewery’s in Newport
Bottle was stamped 2019
As a huge fan of Russian imperials, I couldn’t wait to get home and partake in this journey from a “local”
I’m not a fan of rum however, don’t judge a beer by its label. The pour was deep and heady. The nose was amazing with toffee and caramel scent. Taste took the cake as the barrel enhanced the stout.
Overall, I was pleasantly impressed with this stout.
Hopefully this brewery will have few more next time I visit.

22oz bottle into a goblet. no bottled date that I could find.

Brownish black body. initially there is a pancake on a griddle head, but this quickly dissipated to a ring and covering. no lacing.

dried fruit and molasses on the nose.

the dried fruit does not come through in the taste, and it's all booze and molasses. nothing else going on here.

mouth is on the thin side of medium, finish is a warm alcohol burn.

overall, the strong molasses taste and the alcohol burn make this beer seem stronger than the 10.0abv listed. this and the somewhat thin mouth made this beer less than enjoyable to this palate. a little chocolate or dried fruit would have added a lot to this beer.

Dark brown pour, off white colored head that sticks around for a while. Hints of roasted malt, and a ton of licorice more noticeable as it warms. Hints of oak and rum, but nothing too overpowering. Taste is a subtle amount of chocolate upfront, nice accents of brown sugar and more licorice. The rum barrel is somewhere in there as well. Mouthfeel is relatively thin, a somewhat easy drinker with low booziness. Not bad.

I poured half the bottle into a shaker glass. A very nice head formed. The beer is dark and opaque. the flavor is very interesting. Complex. Vanilla, figs, some roasted notes. Smell is faint, I can't identify what it is. Some nice alcohol warmth.

Pouring a cellar temp 22 oz bottle into a snifter. The beer pours a pitch black color with no light passing through the glass even when held to the light. A fluffy khaki color head of 3.5 cm foams up even with a gentle pour. The head fades slowly from the middle to the edge of the glass. Very tight lattice remains on the glass at the original height even after the center fades to only a surface layer.
The aroma is roasted malt, hits of dark rum and fruit, plums I think, I also get some slight oak notes and definitely some leather notes. Pretty complex nose, with no hop presence that I pick up and the 10% abv is fairly well hidden too.
The first sip reveals a fairly thick body with very fine yet tingly carbonation and slightly sticky texture. Hearty beer for sure.

Flavor is lots of malt and fairly complex as well. I get the dark roasted piece and some dark molassess and brown sugar with rum soaked dark fruit and some dry oak notes. I get a lingering sweet malt and a bit of vanilla too after the swallow. Very drinkable with no warmth or booze on the swallow. I dont find hops on this one and do find it very easy to drink. I will pick this up again as I find it an approachable, yet complex and enjoyable imperial stout.

From draft at brewery. A bit thinner than i expected. Smells kinda astringent. Nice flavor though. Rum is quite present. Looks deep black. No head. Glad to hold onto a bottle for a bit.
