While “nobody puts Baby in the corner”, someone put Rhode Island and RIèzes [ree-ez] in the corner of their countries. Thankfully, both corners have great beer.
RIèzes, our latest barrel aged brew, is a copper hued Belgian style ale. The hops take a back seat in this brew as the malt characteristics shine through. Munich malt, Belgian Special B and Belgian Candy Sugar bring forth aromas and tastes of raisin, brown sugar and caramel. The Belgian yeast strain, with reported links to Chimay, rounds out this brew and offers a sweet bakers bread finish. Find a corner of your own to stash this limited release ale aged in oak barrels. Better yet, just drink it.
MALTS: Munich, Canada Pale, Belgian Special B
KETTLE: Dextrose, Belgian Amber Candy Sugar (boost ABV, gives up front sweetness)
HOPS: Bittering- tradition, flavor- tettang, late addition Czech Saaz
YEAST: special Belgian Yeast Stain with reported links to Chimay Belgium
Aged in Thomas Tew Rum barrels for 3 months
IBU: 29 SRM: 7

A - Dark amber copper red color with a creamy and thick lacing ring.
S - Fruity, caramel, a little candy-like.
T - Lots of oak tannin, delicate caramel sweetness, some spiciness on the back end.
M - Big medium to light heavy body, silky, lip smacking sticky.
O - Not a great beer ... right now, I want to get another to stash away and see where it goes. The most impressive part of this beer is how WELL 12% is totally hidden, now THAT's impressive!

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip. Not so much cloudy as foggy, pours a deep ochre with brief head that fades into small soapiness, sharp multiple small bubbles. Mild scent of Cortland apple, fresh grass, and subtle citron peel. Mouthfeel is very full and smooth, coating is complete but doesn't linger. Fruity malts complement the candy sugariness rounding out with pineapple, banana white grape, apricot, and allspice. Initially this didn't strike me as something very much as it is pretty sweet but it mellows brilliantly. Perhaps a little boost of hops, which are subtle to the point of absence, might balance the sweet character which does hang around and fades to a somewhat clingy dryness, but overall a very strong Belgian-American. The hefty ABV is thoroughly obscured, so don't worry about the alcohol coming through and spoiling anything.

On-tap 10/4/2015 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a snifter glass.
A: The beer is a deep reddish amber color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains brown sugar, alcohol, bourbon, caramelized malts and some fruit.
T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of fruit, caramel and brown sugar. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is very mild but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Smooth and a little crisp but a bit watery, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, very strong kick, decent representation of style, it’s a decent beer but there are better choices available within the style.

22oz. bottle served in a tulip. Pours a dull caramel hue with a loose, quarter inch, off-white head that dissipates into a soapy slick. Clarity is slightly hazy. Nose expresses toasted malts, candy sugar, a belgian yeast strain and a muddled ethanol/molasses quality. Taste consistent with nose - rum barrel is present but buried in the background. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with an easy carbonation and a trace of acidity. Overall, not a bad beer - could perhaps have benefited from a little more time in the rum barrel. Abv is extremely well-hidden.
