Coastal Extreme Brewing Co. "Newport Storm Unknown Variable"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle with the label notched "FRESHEST BEFORE... OCT"
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: "EXPERIMENTAL HOP DOUBLE IPA" at 8% ABV can't be too bad now can it? It pours a very hazy copper body beneath a creamy had of tan. The aroma displays a distinct caramel maltiness along with some apricot, raisin, dried fig, grass, a hint of spiciness, and a thin thread of citrus. The flavor retains the same malt character, which Coastal Extreme is known for, and adds in some more fruit (apple, peach, orange, sweetened grapefruit), earthiness, herbs, leafiness like black tea, and pine. Some alcohol shows, and along with a solid bitterness around 80 IBUs it finishes dry and a little spicy, perhaps with even a touch of black pepper. The pine, earthiness, and herbs linger as well. It's full bodied and malty smooth; and looking back it's still got a solid surface covering to it and there's some great, thick lacing left behind on the glass.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains earthy hops, some citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and citrus. Then a strong but not over-powering earthy hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a decent 2IPA to drink for a while.

Picked up in RI at a shop close to the brewery. Hazy look with good feel. Malt is very present and slight booziness on taste. Personally not a fan of the maltier IPAs but would would recommend to those who are. One and done for me.

This Newport Storm offering is one of their better high octane IPAs. Purchased at the Naval Station Newport Package Sore in a 4-pack. Not too overpowering but you can taste a bit of the alcohol. Hard to believe it's 8.0% ABV. Wish I could get this one in VA. Cheers!

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The beer pours a slightly hazy copper color with some floating sediment. The creamy bleached white head of 1 cm foams up and fades away to a sturdy edge layer.
The aroma is some little bit of sweet grainy malt and then rolls to some earthy and a bit of citrus hops. I also get a little bit of peach note. In general the nose is appealing but just a little mild.
First sip reveals an average body with gentle minimal carbonation. the beer is very easy to drink and the alcohol is incredibly well hidden.
Flavor is grainy malt with a bit of citrus fruit and then the beer moves to some slightly astringent and lingering bitterness. Some pine sap and a bit of grapefruit rind.
This beer drinks easy and I enjoy emptying the bottle fairly quickly with no hint of booze.
This is a sneaky double IPA with good aroma and flavors that has no obvious flaws and proves to be an interesting mix of malt and hop with a lingering hop bite.
