Our first attempt at a bock style and this dark lager was meant to be sweet and rich—many people commented it tastes like a piece of liquid candy! Huge percentages of the sweet chocolate malt coupled with almost 500 pounds of dextrose really gave this beer a unique twist that anyone with a sweet-tooth would die for! Named after our company’s president, Brent Ryan; it is must be nice to have your name on 27,000 labels…

A: Pours a dark brown with a red tint and a small head. no lacing.

S: spices, caramel, molasses, and a little fruit. Fragrances of malt also.

T: Tastes of caramel, molasses, and possibly fig can be distinguised. there was something else in there that was had a bitter taste to it, but i can't put my finger on it.

M & D: Mouthfeel is ok, leaves a little bitter in your mouth at the end followed by a tangyness. Drinkability is about 1 to 2. I wouldn't have a bunch of these.

I am sampling a cellared bottle that I have had for a few years. I am pouring into a pint glass at cellar temp. The beer pours a deep mahogany color with a very small and fizzy surface layer of head that fades quickly to an edge layer. Aroma is all malt with caramel, molasses, toffee, brown sugar and a bit of booze.
First sip reveals a slightly syrupy yet silky texture and minimal carbonation. Very smooth.
Flavor is again all malt, similar to nose. Brown sugar and molasses with some slight booze on the finish. Bites a little. No hops anywhere to be found. The beer is good, but the booze hurts drinkability a little. otherwise, pretty good, better than when fresh I believe.

This beer had a nice medium brown colored body. A thick tan head of about an inch turned to a slick on top after a minute. Loads of carbonation can be seen moving up. Lacing in rings.

The smell has a big burst of caramel. Despite the malted sweetness, the alcoholic nature of this beer helps balance out the aroma. A light chocolate scent is very close in nature to powdered chocolate milk mix.

Very sweet initial taste. A liquid chocolate mixture that leaves it flavor on all surfaces. A mild hops note in the finish wasn't enough to balance off the pure sweet flavor. A light bit of alcohol also hinted at the beer, but like the hops, was knocked back by the sweetness.

Decent thickness, but a little under par for the style. Carbonation seemed a little underpowered considering what can be seen.

An average beer. Might be more enjoyable with a vanilla dessert as the flavors would play against each other. Not the best beer to go to if you are looking for something good in the style, but worth a look.

Dark clear woodsy brown with ruby tones. Head is dense tan with a hint orange color. Nice oily dense foamy ring forms quickly. Aroma begins with an odd malt cream toffee-like burst followed by a bunch of malts. Dank leaves and humid woods, toasted caramel and maple syrup, and dark fruits are all evident. Taste is very malty and has a little too much of a maple syrupy caramel sweet edge to it. The nice bitter character helps to balance but the sweetness continues to stick throughout a long extended dry finish. (I usually don't mind sweetness in a beer but in this one the sweet comes across as too separate from the rest of the brew). Mouthfeel is ok. Nice hop dryness, but overall I think it needs to be fuller and heavier to contain the wide range of tastes. Easy drinkability for the high ABV%. The odd sweetness is starting to get to me more as I finish but doesn't seem to lower drinkability.

This is one insane version of a dopplebock. Very malty is right but there are definitely many other things going on in this, including an overly detached caramel sweetness. The taste and smell are above average for me because they are extra interesting + somehow complex.

12 oz bottle
Pours deep brown with a very off-white - not-quite-tan - head. Retention and lacing are okay. Carbonation is very good and streams up the sides of the glass.
Smell is strong caramel, figs, slightly vinious. Slight chocolate is present as well. You can very much tell the alcohol in the aroma.
Taste is very big caramel, figs, dates and plums. Still quite vinious. A slight coffee flavor is noticiable as is chocolate (much stronger in the taste). There is a mild to moderate hop bitterness/taste and a strong alcohol heat.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin, especially with all of the flavors going on in this beer, I would expect it to be a bit more filling.
Overall, an interesting dopple, not exactly to style, but not bad either. Worth a try if you can find it, but it's not something to write home about.

A - wow, pours a dark black, more so than i expected with slight ruby highlights with a thin white head that laces quickly

S - smells like dark fruits, surprising, it smells more like a barleywine, with the faintest chocolate aroma

T - weird, it has a delicious coffee flavor, did NOT expect that, hmm a very nice coffee/chocolate taste

M - smooth with no bitter aftertaste, very nice

D - high, a good brew, worth every penny

Caramel colored with a thick and frothy dark beige head that sits a half inch high on top, slowly sinking back but leaving a ring just above the liquid. Aroma of toasted malt and deep caramel, brown sugar and plum. Aroma is sweet fig, resinous brown sugar, toffee malts, a faint bit of smoke, and some sweet fruit and marshmallow in the finish. Just a faint sign of alcohol warmth lingers, gently warming the mouth and throat. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel, understated carbonation. Very drinkable.

Pours clear chestnut, off white head, that fell somewhat quick.
Big bready nose mingled with toasted nuts and cocoa nubs.
Aromatics finish a bit hot with hints of vanilla and caramel.
Body medium and mildly crisp, yet juicy.
Fresh malt on the pallet, with toasted accents.
Fairly clean, minimal esters, a mere suggestion of bananna and spice.
Caramel coated dark bread cubes spiked with diluted dark rum.
Finishes rather longish, with residual sugars, a mild bitterness, and a warming of the esophogus.
A large bock and tasty, but more malt, a fresher profile and fuller body would help.

Pours an amber color with a very small head that is gone quickly and doesn't leave any lacing on the glass. The aroma is malty with some fruit characters, spice and alcohol. The flavor has a lot of diacetyl, dark fruits, and sweetness. Something in the flavor just doesn't work. Perhaps it's the diacetyl. The body is a little thin but the drinkablility is ok.

Pours a deep deep amber color with good clarity and a light patchy coating over the top. Nose is caramel sweet, with a light phenolic, almost smokey, character. With a deep inhale, I get a light puff of alcohol. Flavor is big sweet, almost molasses and maple sweetness, with a light smokeyness poking around on the finish, even a bit of a nuttyness on the finish. I'd like to see more toasty character in this one. Its tasty, but not what I want in a dopplebock. Feel is thick with a light to moderate carbonation. It really is a heavy feeling beer with a lot of residual sugars/dextrins hanging around. I like this one, but I don't think it is to style. For being over 8%, this one is more drinkable than I would have expected. Not bad, but not what I expect from a dopplebock.

Brownish-red in hue with a beige head; at the apex the foam was one finger tall. Head retention was poor; it quickly faded to a soapy cap. The subsequent lacing was spotty and not widespread. Overall, the appearance is respectable but forgettable.

The nose is nothing like any Doppelbock I have smelled. I detect concentrated prune juice, beets, partially dehydrated beef, caramel, nuts, and some veggie/earthy/woody notes. The more sniff the louder the nuttiness is becoming; this is a fair tradeoff because the meat aromas are fading. It wrap-ups a bit hot. Moderate potency; the nose isn’t all that pleasant to smell. Sure, I’m not repulsed but I have no desire to take a sip. Here goes nothing…

The palate is surprisingly small. I have no qualms with a Doppelbock being sweet, hell the SA Doppel is king of sweet bocks and I like that one. This offers a different kind of sweetness; like the nose I find ample amounts of prunes, beets, brown sugar, and caramel. More malty sweetness manifests itself as caramel, molasses, and chocolate. Before the swallow is a blast of alcohol heat, this is the only thing that breaks up the sweetness. What is the deal with the undercurrents of nuts? Sweet finish; tacky, sweet aftertaste that lingers way too long… it reminds me of warm Dr. Pepper. If Spoetzl ever brewed a Double Shiner Bock, this would be it. Yikes! Sorry, but this tastes cheap. I can finish my glass but it is too much of a chore.

Around medium, maybe a tickle fuller but still too small for the massive sweetness in the flavor profile. At least give me a body to “savor” the sweetness and so what the 8.2% is well hidden because the mouthfeel is average at best.

I should have never allowed Coastal Extreme to use my name for this beer. Extreme Bock, eh? Extreme disappointment for sure. The beer lacks complexity, I would have even been happy if this beer was more powerful. So I have a simple and wimpy beer. What a losing combination. No flash, no substance, no point. I am happy I tried Brent. Thank you michiganmiked for the bottle! Go Big Red!

12oz bottle purchased as a single from Julio's, Marlboro, MA, I think.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, still formed a 3/4" tan head over the clear dark dark copper brew. Head is dense and lasting, with heavy frothy lacing. Aroma is malty, fruity, and somewhat alcoholic. Taste is wow, a lot better than I was expecting. Hearty grains, a shot of dark fruits, with a dry finish and lingering warming. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth over the tongue, and drinkability is nice as well. Maybe age is finally letting this one find its niche.

Received a bottle of Brent as part of a long gone BIF. It actually sat in the bottom of a drawer at work for several months because I accidentally placed some packing material overtop it. No born on or freshness dating, though a “extreme” bock should probably have no real issues because of it. (The heat is locked up tight at work where it is usually in the 60’s regardless of the time of year. Pours an almost opaque dark brown with a sturdy three fingered off-white head. It showed excellent retention and lacing. Very malty aroma that was mostly chocolate and molasses.
As expected, this had a distinctive malt flavor (mostly caramel and chocolate, but there was some dried fruits and nuts as well). The beer was kept in check, though by a substantial herbal hop presence that helped wash it through. It was a light medium body, not overly thick with only a slight alcohol bite to it, if any. Thanks to the hops, if finished more dry than sugary.

Appearance: Dark brown, with a decent amount of thick head.

Smell: Overcooked vegetables and permed hair...Smelled reminded me of a lunch lady that served me in junior high...

Taste: Caramel and toffee, it got way too cloying for me, especially at the end of my sample when it warmed up a bit more.

Foamy tan head a top a deep brown with shades of ruby; almost opaque. Spotted lace with decent strength.

An artificially sweetened, big caramel aroma. An unpleasant musty, chocolate character.

A huge wave of sweetness at first; molasses, milk chocolate, and heavy vanilla and cream. This is followed by an earthiness that actually tastes dirt-like and musty. A slight bitterness followed by the annoying and overpowering sweetness in the aftertaste.

Borderline full bodied; creamy and almost syrupy on the palate.

The sweetness and lack of balance just ruins this bock. This offering has pushed me one step closer to writing off Coastal Extreme altogether; another disappointing offering.

A dark brown beer with ruby highlights. Has a big light brown head that fades fast. There is a sweet malty aroma with hints of coffee in the background. The flavor starts sweet and slowly moves to a roasted malt bitterness. The alcohol starts to make it self felt on the finish with hints of licorice as it warms the throat going down.

I'm sorry to say it because I love to support the local scene, but this is one of the worst beers I've ever had. An "extreme" experiment gone wrong in my opinion. Starts off ok I suppose; a little light for a dopplebock, a translucent brown color with a quickly disappearing head. I could tell as soon as I smelled it that this beer might be a bit strange. It's a mix of soggy cardboard and that soy sauce smell that you just never want in beer. Had some sweet carmelly sugar smells so I thought it might have a chance, but no dice. Taste is just downright awful. Cloyingly sweet, abrasive alcohol tastes and an oily dirty mouthfeel. Gross. No Balance whatsoever. I have no idea how anyone could drink this. Be warned.

Newport Storm Series (Brent)

Purchased in a Farm fresh in VA beach.

Appearance- Dark mahogany brown with a very thick foamy head. Head quickly dissapated.
Smell- mollasses and roast coffee beans/ nuts.
Taste- sickeningly sweet. pure sugar melted into liquid form. Hint of molasses and raisins.
Mouthfeel- the alcohol burns right up through your upper palatte. Otherwise just to sugary.

Overall- this beer gets a thumbs down!! A basic porter with 10x the sugar and twice the alcohol! Luckily this isn't a regular offering from Newport.
