Finally an Extreme IPA for the hophead!!! Named after a brewery niece, craft brew lovers repeatedly ask us to remake Chloe, our Imperial IPA. We dry hopped Chloe with loads of the hop Chinook that lent a wonderful grapefruity character to the brew! Cherish any bottles you can find. PROST!

Thanks to TheManiacalOne for this brew.
Pours a cloudy yellowish/orange color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger plus off-white head, lots of nice sticky lacing afterwards. The nose is of hops, slight malts, citrus, and some caramel. The taste mostly follows the nose, nice hops/malt combo, citrus, also getting some pears, and cherries in there. The finish is slightly dry. Medium body. Very drinkable, this is a easy drinking DIPA, but watch out. I like the balance between hops/malts one not really overpowering the other. Glad to have a chance to try some other Coastal Brew's.

Pours a cloudy goldgen orange with a full finger head of white that melts to sticky lacing.
Aromas are sweet citrus hops...oranges and pineapples.
Mouthfeel is smooth and full with tiny carbonations.
Flavors are sweet citrus as well. Oranges and pineapples that melts to grapefruit skin bitterness. Strong medicinal alcohol presence as well.
Alcohol warmth as you swallow.
Unfortunately the medicinal alcohol flavor and presence distracts from the rest of the wonderful flavors.

Pours a mild head into my imperial pint - odd because the previous bottle exploded into a sea of foam a nice golden orange with a citrus hoppy nose.
A nice clean dry taste of hoppy tangerine. This brew is pretty good but not the be all of IPAs. Alcohol is well hidden as is the balance.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden color with a beaten egg white head that leaves a few dots of lacing
Smell: Newport, we have a problem here! We have a solvent aroma that reminds me of my BJCP class when we put a touch of nail polish into a beer to identify an off flavor; some floral hops are here too, but the acetone is overwhelming
Taste: Starts with an overlty fusel alcohol character that has taken over the malt bill; after the swallow, it gets even worse as there is that solvent flavor that descends into the finish; I think we have some diacetyl going on, too
Mouthfeel: A bit slick on the tongue with moderate carbonation
Drinkability: Drain pour..this is the first Newport Storm beer I have tasted and I would hope it is not representative of the brewery; in any event, they would have been well advised to pitch this; it's a reputation buster

Crystal clear apricot color with an inch-high lid of beige meringue, leaving sheets of lace up the sides of the glass. Vertical streams of bubbles run up to the surface.
Inviting aroma of flowery and citrusy hops, cinnamon, ripe pear, and the faintest indication of the alcohol warmth waiting beneath.
Full and rich mouthfeel leads to flavors of citrus and cinnamon, a grainy and resinous malty base riding beneath, some ABV warmth, and a citrus peel linger. The citrus peel flavor is not so strong or bitter as to detract. Not overly hoppy for a double, 56 IBU's.
I like this one and find it very drinkable.

A - this DIPA pours a dark orangeish brown color with faint if any carbonation, a thin white head is barely present
S - piney sweet aroma with distinct honey floral aromas
T - hoppy of course, floral honey taste transfers to the taste as well, rather sweet, the hops are rather subtle, in fact i wonder why this is a double IPA instead of just a regular IPA
M&D - a great hoppy/sweet balance, quite a nice IPA, but i dont think it is intense enough to be a DIPA, but whatever

Pours a five finger white head that fades slowly leaving a little lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Malty/piney nose. Starts sweet but with the hops right there but not overwhelming, slight bitter aftertaste. Nice double IPA. $1.75 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Gauzy pumpkin infused with salmon pink. The lightly creamy cap is pale golden beige and is a good color match for the beer beneath. I'm happy to see that the crumbling mesa of foam appears to have stopped in mid-crumble and is hanging around for a more than respectable amount of time, but unfortunately, an underwhelming amount of sea foam lace finds its way to the glass. As well, the shards of foam are more watery and transient than they are hopcrusty. As a DIPA, it falls a bit short; a sentence that I hope I don't have to type again.
I know that Chloe isn't fresh out of the hopper, but with the first review a mere five months ago, she isn't ancient either. Why then is the nose so lacking in hoppiness? With a hop bill consisting of Chinook, Cascade, East Kent Goldings and Magnum, the aroma should be a feast for the senses. Instead, it's the equivalent of bologna on white. Mildly butterscotch-like malty... that's it. As a DIPA, it falls considerably short; a sentence that I hope I don't have to type yet again.
I can't think about this beer as a DIPA, I just can't do it. If I do, it'll end up as one of the worst versions of my favorite style ever. As to what style it more closely resembles... that's hard to say. There's a decent quantity of malt that provides flavors such as orange taffy, caramel and butterscotch. It is sort of Scotch aleish, although with much more hoppiness than that style normally possesses.
There's no shortage of hop bitterness. I'll be damned though if I can taste much in the way of hop flavor. I'd love to be able to pull the Chinook and Cascade free from the malty muck (East Kent Goldings and Magnum, you're on your own) so that they actually contribute something of value other than their alpha acids. Dull grapefruit pith manages to make a shallow impression on the palate while keeping my excitement meter on zero. As a DIPA, it falls woefully short; a sentence that I really hope I don't have to type a fourth time.
The body/mouthfeel is, by far, Chloe's best attribute. She's a full-figured lass, though with nary an ounce of fat. I'm enjoying the sticky resinousness that the hops provide, so at least they're doing their part to make up for the brewers' lack of skill in unlocking their flavor potential. Maybe this beer simply shone bright early and faded faster than most. Hard to say.
As a DIPA, Chloe falls ridiculously short. My love for hops is the only thing keeping me from throwing out sub-3.0 scores left and right. If this is Coastal Extreme's idea of extreme beer then they really have no idea what extreme beer tastes like. No need to batten down the hatches for this one.

Poured into an Ommegang chalice.
A-Opaque orange amber beer. 1/2" white head fades to 1/16th" in a minute. Lacing is o.k.
S-Some grassy hop notions. Some alcohol.
T-Caramba! Grass, not grassy hops, like vegital hop bines plus an episode of a "swamp thing" comic book, paper and all; hops that are too subtle, then some malt presence for an iota (ringwood yeast?) (no? o.k....), then extreme (like it says on the bottle, i guess) boozy alchoholic finish. This is one rough ass IPA "cyclone"...bitterness is just wrong for the style, IMHO.
(56 IBUs???? Where are they??)
M-Solid medium mouthfeel, with a bit of chewiness: the best thing about this beer.
D-Waaay too much boozy alchoholic character for me. Not enough hops for me either. I didn't finish this beer: (!)
CRUX: NOT MY KIND OF AMERICAN DOUBLE IPA. Still, I'm determined to mix the remaining 5 beers with some Beck's ( 3 ounces at a time...) or something to "get 'em down" somehow...I paid $9.00 for a six-pack in Newport, but CHUMP is not my name... I will survive (the Newport Chloe storm...) somehow...where there's a will, there's a way....
Note: It's mid-August, 2006. And 3 of the 6 are still chillin' in the DBF....waitin' for an enemy to drop by so I can pawn/pimp them...

This is one I was looking forward to. I like Coastal Extreme's Maelstrom IPA, so I was expecting good things.
The appearance is good. Typical DIPA appearance with deep amber color and a decent, white head.
The smell carried a hint of hops, and some citrus smells.
The taste felt like too many parts that didn't meld together all the way. There are lots of bitter tastes and some subdued citrus hops. Bready malts try to offer some balance. Alcohol is present. Lots of flavors competing with one another. Some metallic tastes and off flavors come to notice.
The mouthfeel is lost a little with all the flavors fighting for control of your palate. Drinkability would be average. Not a bad beer, but not outstanding.
Coastal Extreme is a brewery I enjoy, but continue to be a little bewlidered by. Some of their brews are great, but the consistancy across the line isn't there. I've noticed some off flavors in a couple of their brews lately. I hope they take care of it- their good brews are worth reaching for.

Poured from a bottle into a Newport Storm Pint glass. Appearance was a hazy light orange/yellow with an inch of light foam.
The smell is typical of an IPA.
The taste is slightly more hoppy and a little more bitter than most IPA I have tried, but still a very drinkable brew.

I gave this one all 4's as its a good beer but doesn't strike me as a DIPA. Appearance is typical of a DIPA, somewhat hazy amber color with a nice white head. Mouthfeel was smooth and taste was very malty for a DIPA but the bitterness thats typical of the DIPA's I've been drinking. I followed this with a Founder's IPA that I felt was hoppier and closer to the DIPA style.

Pours a hazy, glowing apricot in color. Dense, foamy head that settles to a porous sheet leaving walls of condensed lacing.
Bright fruity esters: apricot, pear, astringent grapefruit. Alive hop resins and oil with whaffs of intense alcohol.
Burnt, caramel malts that aren't close to being matched with the hop profile. Hop resin; astringent and powdery dry fruit: apricot, orange, grapefruit. A hint of bubblegum prior to a slippery bitterness leaving hop oils for the aftertaste.
Medium bodied; as filmy as can be on the palate. Noxious and annoying mouthfeel.
As a hophead, this one seemed out of balance with a few off flavors. The mouthfeel really stood out to me in terms of a major flaw. Again, the Cyclone Series continues to depress me.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A: The beer is a hazy, pale amber color with a large, thick, foamy white head that fades at a regular rate and leaves a thin lace on the glass.
S: Hops, citrus and caramelized malt in the aroma, but the hops seem a bit subdued, especially for a 2IPA.
T: There are a couple of unexpected qualities in the taste. Normally with a beer of this style, the burst of hops is the first thing I taste. However, with this beer I taste the malty sweetness first, which is the first surprise. The second surprise is that the sweetness isnt the typical citrus sweetness that you expect in a 2IPA. Its more of the ginger/honey flavor that you get in a Winter Warmer or a Nut Brown type. Nonetheless, both of which are a pleasant change of pace. The hops bite is indeed there and follows the sweetness abruptly along with a twinge of an alcohol burn. One thing that is beer has that is typical of the style if the nice, bitter hops after-taste.
M: Smooth due to the sweetness, but still crisp, with a medium body, medium carbonation and given the sweetness referenced earlier, it doesnt leave any stickiness in the finish.
D: This beer is certainly drinkable due to its smoothness, sweetness, and burst of flavor.
I think this beer falls into the category of all-purpose. Its one that you can just sit, chill and drink one or two. You can also drink it for the duration of the evening.

I am sampling this brew at room temp in a snifter. The beer pours a orange color with small streams of carb rising to surface. There is a off white creamy head of 1 cm that recedes very slowly. Aroma is fruit and citrusy hops with a bit of white grape and some booziness mixed in.
First sip reveals a thinner body than expected and very fine mild carbonation.
Flavor starts with some sugary sweetness with white grape and maybe berry, then rolls to some rindy hops and finishes with a peppery alcohol bite that is slightly medicinal. This hinders the drinkability a bit.
A decent beer, but not one that I would buy again. I think maybe the alcohol is too big with not enough other balanced malt and hops to cover it.

Poured from a 12oz bottle a dark caramel, leaving a tan head about 1in thick. The aroma is sweet, hop floural, frosting sweet smell, honey and spices. The taste on the palate is very bitter up front, but balanced with a honey, malty, sweetness. Only to be attacked with a grapefruit bitterness that finishes with a warming alcohal presence. Good DIPA, haven't had a newport storm in awhile I will def be coming back to this one.

A hazey yellow/amber beer. Has a big foamy white head. A lot of sweet malt note intermingled with some fruity peach and citrus notes. The flavor has some bready and nutlike malt characters. Followed by the fruity peach and citrus notes mentiond in the aroma earlier, Finished with a nice peppery hop snap

cloudy and orange like deadish fire embers, big majestic head that settles with three-dimensional lacing in chunks and clumps all about the glass. nose is unexpected.. a familiar honey scent of pils malts. this mixes with a slight hint of bready peppermint and fresh hops. double ipa? dunno.. maybe a rhode island double ipa.
initially sharply bitter, sickly sweet syrupy feel and a sourish yeast flavor give this the feel of high-octane malt liquor. finish is very hoppy in a rough, dirty way. another example of beer that tastes like a clump of grass with the mud-covered roots attached. part of the foul bitterness here is reminiscent of dairy.. like slightly-spoiled milk. at 56 ibu's, there must be a significant amount of hops- none of which are really tasted here due to the abrasive jolt the beer delivers. you can feel them.. the bitterness, the rough gristle sticking to your cheek walls. but i'd rather taste. finish is all about an unflavored alcohol heat... think vodka.
not too drinkable, not too enjoyable. not a double ipa. not something i would repeat.
