Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light amber, with a decent, foamy, white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The smell is well-blended with hops, malt & citrus.

T: The taste starts with a good hops burst and follows with just a hint of citrus & malt sweetness. The hops bitterness comes back and remains in the after-taste.

M: Smooth & very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, clean & dry finish.

D: Easy to drink, not too filling, might be a bit less flavorful than most IPA’s, but I can go with this one for a while. If you don’t like your IPA very sweet, this would be one for you to try.

A: Dark golden amber, with off-white head.

S: Grapefruit and malt, nothing overwhelming, but some nice hints of hops.

T: Pretty malty to begin with, but very nicely balanced with hops. Mostly a citrus hops kind of taste.

M: Nice and smooth, great carbonation.

D: It's good, but wouldn't order another due to other beers available. Worth a try. In my opinion, Newport Storm beers are much much better on tap than bottles.

Newport Storm Maelstrom IPA
12 oz brown bottle
Bottle Code : 6.111
Served in a 20 oz tulip pint glass

Pours a hazy dark mustard yellow with a golden tint. Fluffy white top with really nice patterns of sticky lace.

Fruity nose with strong whiffs of citrus.

Sweet grapefruit, orange and lime flavors with an ultra-soft mouthfeel. Toasted grain and light caramel backdrop with a pleasant hop finish that provides an intense fruity quality. Overall, I think this is pretty solid.

Originally reviewed on July 22, 2006. On tap in Wood's Hole, MA. Pours a deep ruddied brown. No head. Caramalized sweet corn and orange hop aroma. Peculiar overbearing old yeasts interfere with any decent hop malt play that might be occuring. Finishes sacharrin and stagnant. Carbonation is low. Cloying smack of indescipt sugars.

12 oz. brown bottle code 3.111. "I'm a risk taker. I'm growing beer in my parent's back yard," printed under the cap. Pours a lightly hazed, peachy copper with a nice white head that hold pretty well. Aroma of caramel and biscuit malts hints of grain husk and vanilla, light citrus hop aroma of cascades. Light bodied, with a slippery texture. Light caramel sweetness, bready hints. Hop hits halfway with a little spice, juicy and refreshing just before the finish that is full of dry pine bitterness. Bittering hops are pretty dominant. A good IPA, refreshing and complex. A good fix when you're jones'n for some hops.

Cheers!

Beer is a golden brown with a moderate head that leaves some lacing in the glass. The malt is there at the first sip, but then the hops take over from there. It is a complex beer that allows you to keep thinking about it long after the first glass is empty. Smooth and just the right amount of bitterness to go along with the hoppy character of the beer.

Bottle code 619. Summer release, so it's fresh.

Appearance:

Pours a crystal clear light brown with a quarter inch of creamy white foam on top.

Aroma:

Subtle notes of grapefruit and cut grass, but no stand out aromas.

Taste/Mouthfeel:

Mouthfeel is slick and refreshing, but flavors don't comply quite as well. Very one sided with hops dominating - an odd pine sensation coupled with an offputting, weak malt backbone. Not my cup of tea at all. The worst IPA I've had in recent memory, with very little complexity and pleasant hop presence I have come to appreciate over the years.

Light smooth tasting IPA. Very drinkable and pleasant to the palate. Not to overpowering with hops but nice clean hop finish. Smells fruity and floral with some yeastiness. Yellow/golden clean and clear beer in color. Clean white head very little lacing of the glass. Nice after taste mild bite not to strong of an IPA. Toned down IPA but worth drinking. Good overall offering of this style beer. Maybe more hops adn unfiltered may pick this offering up a bit. Give it a nice hop kick and you may have something here. Not bad but not the best. I enjoy a milder IPA sometimes and this one is it.

Pours a medium copper color with a minimal head. Smell is bready with a tinge of hops. Not an in your face IPA, pretty well balanced with a strong malt backbone. Hops are present, but not overpowering at all. Leaves a nice bitterness lingering on the palate. Somewhat of a dry beer imho. Nice.

A: Pours a slightly hazy almost perfect amber color. Nice off white frothy half finger head that has great retention. NIce lace left on the glass.
S: Nice fruit hop notes with a good bready malt backbone. Very fresh smelling.
T & M: Grassy and leafty hop taste well balanced with a bready and biscuity malt background. Some fruit hops in there, possibly lemon. Hop notes aren't as big as I would have liked, but not matter, still a decent fall back ipa. Good bitterness in the aftertaste that clings to the back of the tongue. Not as slick as it looks--kind of crawls through the mouth. Quite a smooth beer.
D: Definately a drinkable beer. While in Newport, get this on tap as it's most likely the best (or only) micro at almost every bar.

Poured into a pint glass.

A-Clear light golden orange beer. 2"+ head, moderate carbonation evident.
S-Sweet malts. Almost no hop aroma.
T-Some mild hop twang, but for the $9.00 I paid for this 6-pack in Newport, I expect a bigger hop bang for my buck: especially from a beer that calls itself "Maelstrom IPA"....and has 4 hop additions and is dry-hopped! Wow. This is one mild-ass IPA.
M-Decent.
D-Drinkable, and highly, at that, whoopie.

CRUX: GOOD ALE HERE. It is a decent ale, but as an IPA, uh, hells no!
Newport, (and the world,) deserves a much better local IPA than this. When I think of Newport, I think of the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, you know, the one where the Duke Ellington Band changed the world when Paul Gonsaleves played, like, this timeless 18 minute screaming sax solo to some blonde in the crowd who was wearing her underwear, or something, ...intense stuff, but that was a Newport Storm! I wish this brewery would use that solo as IPA inspiration and stop fucking around. This is supposed to be art, dammit!

Poured a copper hue with a two finger frothy head. Decent retention and lacing.

The smell was mostly malt. There was a hint of flowery hop, but the aroma was dominated by the sweet malt.

The taste was likewise sweet and malty. I was disappointed that there wasn't a stronger hop presence.

The mouthfeel was full. There was good carbonation, but the finish could have been drier.

Drinkable, but not the best example of the style.

Dusty Gold. Subdued, interesting nose of burnt caramel and citrusy, peppery cascade hops. Not very aromatic to say the least. Pleasant malty flavor that begins with some nice malty tones, mainly burnt caramel and apple. The grain bill is great. The hops are what I don’t like. They just don’t seem to work very well. I think that a larger blend of chinook and centennial would work mch better with the malt profile. I still enjoyed this though.

A: Poured a light amber color with a nice fluffy white head. Clear, no haze/sediment or anything. Scant lacing.

S: Hoppy resinous smell, floral and piney and just nice. Faint bready malt aroma underneath.

T: Hop bomb! Bitter, sticky pine flavors, very low malty sweetness.

M: Medium body, spot on carbonation. Alcohol warmth is fairly low.

D&N: A nice IPA. Seems to get everything right. Very nice beer to make my comeback with.

I got this IPA via trade, actually sometime ago. Late on the review, but took note.
It poured nice, clear golden in color, not over carbonated. The head starts out full and thick only to fade to a wispy lace. Nice touch on the glass. The aroma was floral & bread-like. Not real strong.
The taste; Good toasted malt, caramel & earthy bread. Hops provide a backdrop of a solid full bodied base. Hops don't overtake the taste or the beer, mild for an IPA.
The softer hop notes make this beer very drinkable. The 6+ abv is nice as well. The beer pairs well with alot more food choice than an overhopped version of this style would. Good job Newport!!
Thanks again for the trade.

pours a nice clear pale orange color with decent white head.

smells quite malty, with sweetness and and some earthiness. hops are there too but not as pronounced as the malt sweetness.

tastes really malty. little hops, mainly in the finish. im not sure if i have a bit of an old sample, but it's alright.

overall this is very mediocre. as i said i'm not sure of the condition of my sample, but it doesn't strike me as anything special.
