On-tap 5/16/09 at Doherty's East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass. The beer is described by the brewer as "a barleywine/porter hybrid aged in Thomas Tew Rum barrels".
A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma is of dark malts, dark fruits, coffee and a touch of hops.
T: The taste is sweet up front with flavors of dark fruit, rum, caramel and coffee. Then a mild but complementary hops presence comes in to bring some balance. The malt character is hearty. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick. I didn't get too many barleywine qualities out of this beer, mostly the porter qualities. I like the twist that the rum barrel aging adds and I definitely like the Rum Chipped Porter better. Overall this is a good experimental beer that's good to drink for a while if you want something different.
