Served in a snifter from a tap marked "experimental" at the Newport, RI brewery.
Billed as a one-time offering limited to two barrels only available by sample at the Visitors' Center. Described as Summer Ale aged in Thomas Tew Rum barrels (Coastal Extreme's own distilled rum)
Pours a deep, hazy orange color with a good tan head with retention. Good aromas of grapefruit and piney hops combined with pungent aromas of dark rum, that are not overpowering. Tastes of piney hops, subtle malts, balanced with smooth rum. Mouthfeel is smooth, with strong hops and thick rum left on the palate.
Overall, this is a great beer to try that is surprising well-balanced. While bourbon barrel aging is common, rum barrels are different, quite tasteful and not overpowering. Although brewery staff commented the company was hesitant to ruin more rum barrels, I could definitely see other rum-barreled beers in Coastal Extreme's future, after the results of this beer.
