Day 3 of Jed’s got a big birthday tomorrow and I’m down to clown around some. We were south, we were east, and today the play is south of the south, Tampa. Started with an old familiar seen twice before and now out to Ybor City. Cute little section with its brick roads and streetcars and huh. I’ve seen breweries in renovated, repurposed, & restored elementary schools, barns, churches, & train stations, but a 120-year-old fire house is a new one for me. So, in and through…

Deep & narrow, most unusual. Small ‘U’ shaped white marble topped bar to the rear, black vertical corrugatedlike base. Seating for 5 on the front side on short short shorty backed leather wood chairs. Large rusted horizontal copper panel on the brick barback wall arched inlay with 13 alt height tap handles, each with a bat atop in a different position of winged motion. Like bats in flight, I believe the proper word for it is a ‘cauldron’. Glassware shelved below. Cool this way and that way 10 baseball bulb lighting fixture over the bar (it’s the aesthetics, you know).

Lots of distressed brick, concrete floorings, cool arched add ins and overhead in gray below a corrugated ceiling. Drop 3 prong filament bulb cheese wheel lamps & track spots. Leaf & bramble riding the wall, a stained glass bat piece up high perched, lots of local art, and a large “I hope not to run into that in real life” bat sculpture up front (judging your beer choices). Can cooler for the future, merch displayed, and some good beer books shelved.

A half dozen plus 2-seat white marble tables on shared benchings on the outer wall from the entrance back to one side, and a 4 seat bar counter ledge adjacent forward with another cauldron above, and another ledge further in for the standing at below framed prints & paintings. 2 black leather booths with rectables to the right rear, and a white marble bar counter table off the bar.

13 taps, a spread of styles to keep me busy for a while (The One Who Gathers, Helles Lager, 5%; Anodyne, German Pilsner, 5%; Thievery of the Human Collective, English Porter, 5.3%; The Seer, Super Rye Saison, 7.5%; Out of the Tropics, Florida Weisse w/Pineapple & Mango, 5.9%; Out of the Bramble, Florida Weisse w/Raspberry, Blackberry, & Blueberry, 5.9%; Out of the Prunus Persica, Florida Weisse w/Peach, Vanilla, & Cinnamon, 5.9%; Curiously Civilized, WC IPA, 7.5%; Grim Interest, Hazy IPA, 7%; Path of Defiance, Hazy IPA, 7.5%; Micro Furiosity, Hazy IPA, 7.5%; The Count, Double Stout, 11.5%; Mina, Double Stout, 11.5%).

I stopped wanting to know after the WC IPA as I’m not crazy for hazies and doubt double stouts, so I just kept to the top of the list (The One Who Gathers, Helles Lager, crisp, easy drinking, really good; Anodyne, German Pilsner, clean, crisp, lovely; Thievery of the Human Collective, English Porter, toffee, chocolate, nutty, solid; The Seer, Super Rye Saison, a bit of funk, spicy, yum; Curiously Civilized, WC IPA, citrus, piney, dank, yep; and all 3 sours jammed. Out of the Tropics, Florida Weisse w/Pineapple & Mango, sweet & sour, well done; Out of the Bramble, Florida Weisse w/Raspberry, Blackberry, & Blueberry, oh yeah, berry nice; Out of the Prunus Persica, Florida Weisse w/Peach, Vanilla, & Cinnamon, I generally don’t much go for the vanilla anythings but this one was liquid cobbler). Hard to say but Helles, Pilsner, English Porter, WC IPAs for the wins, but really, everything was good.

The menu list header reads “Your local bat brewery and natural wine bar”. I mean, obvi! Cecitender this day, pleasant, knowledgeable, and no, I‘m not singing Hope Sandoval songs in my head. Little brewery to the rear (I put a looking in on it) that totally gets the job done. Something for everyone who is us (Dena got her sours on). Jed says ‘mic drop’ on this place. Yep. A solid list, and some very well made beers here. Someone knows what they’re doing. Good house, all low lit and chill chill. Well done!

Sky Puppy Brewing felt like walking into the mind of a feverish sculptor who’d just inherited a monastery and decided to start pouring beer instead of absolution. The outside was a clean brick façade, crisp lines, sharp edges—civilized. But the moment you stepped through that arched door, it was clear you’d entered something older, stranger, and far more personal.

The light hung soft under vaulted ceilings. Exposed brick, arched alcoves, and bar taps shaped like bats frozen mid-flight—all gave the place the aura of a cathedral to fermentation. The art along the wall—chaotic brushstrokes, half-human faces—seemed to whisper about madness and inspiration in equal measure. There were sculptures, too—grotesque, brilliant things that looked half-formed, like they’d clawed their way out of molten bronze. You could almost hear them breathing if you stared long enough.

The taplist read like poetry from another dimension: Shadows of Self Realization, Palpable Harmonic Resonance, Death & All Her Friends. Each name sounded like a confession from someone on the brink. I started with a Czech pilsner so clean it could’ve been used to wash the sins of Tampa. Then came the dunkel—dark, toasted, and cruel. One more, a hazy IPA, because at that point I’d lost control of the experiment.

The people around me spoke softly, reverently. One man in a straw hat told me this was his church. Another said he came for the art. Nobody mentioned the beer first, which told me everything I needed to know.

I sat at the bar until the sun bled out of the sky, downing pint after pint like a condemned man sipping morphine before the gallows. By the time I rose to leave, the night outside was humming, alive, full of danger and electricity. Ybor City pulsed a few blocks away, its chaos calling like a siren—but I turned from it, slipping into the shadows instead.

There was a sense that Sky Puppy wasn’t a place you visited. It was a place that consumed you for a few hours, rewired your brain chemistry, and spat you back into the world a slightly different animal than when you came in.

Went on opening night so of course busy and lively, but still didn't have to wait too long for beers and the people who were behind bar (assume the owners) are pleasant to talk to. A few different styles on tap and the beers are interesting, so worth checking out, especially if you're in Ybor, but definitely seems like a place that you go and conversate with friends or relax in (it's a small place and has no TVs).
