a style i was never wild about but have recently been getting down with, i think this is an exceptional example of it, good enough to have come from europe frankly, really authentic and polished, these guys are for real! brick red in the glass and super clear, a little deeper in color than many, well past the bronze range where these usually live, a nice collection of just off white bubbles on top over an inch high and leaving lace in the wake of each swig. the nose is toasted and a little bit rich, toffee and golden raisin nuance, bread yeast and baked bread too, good minerality, very lightly herbal from some old world hops i would suspect, nutty and hearty, autumnal a little ahead of schedule, im saying a lot about it, but actually its rather understated in the nose. the flavor follows that fall theme for me with subtle acorn and even chestnut and hazelnut character from the grain, but what strikes me right away is how dry this is overall, usually we see big caramel and toffee richness in vienna lagers, but this one is really actually quite crisp, very patiently lagered it seems, super professional to me. notes of almond, toasted bread, hard pretzel, and old world lager yeast, just delicious, drinkable, dry for the style and its color depth, and really clean on the whole. lighter in body than it looks too, large sized bubbles for the carbonation makes it dance and pop, and it warms up well too. about as good an american made example of this style as i can recall having, these guys are off to a heck of a start!
