a massive and massively spendy bottle of imperial stout aged in willett and bowman brothers bourbon barrels for over a year, as fantastic as anticipated from these guys, who have done big stouts well, i think this is the first barrel aged offering i have had from them so far, really a nice showcase of these whiskeys, not overly heavy to drink in terms of both body and exposed alcohol either, highly refined, smooth, and majorly flavorful, thanks to my boy for picking this up in his travels last week! nearly black, high shine, and close to still, attractive packaging on this, sharp with the gold wax, almost greasy, slick looking beer, not insanely viscous but sturdy looking for sure. the aroma is wonderful, heavy roast, coffee notes, and barrel nuance, toasted coconut, good espresso, and some nice bitterness through it balancing some of the corn whiskey sweet and the vanilla and honey notes the barrels bring, light licorice, smoke, and umami, all really nice. layers of dark chocolate, molasses, and quality bourbon intermingle on the palate, warming alcohol and vanilla but its not that boozy really for how strong it is, even at temperature, some nice earthy malt layers, some caramel too, not overly sweet but decadent anyway with all the whiskey, cocoa and coconut are there, tobacco and raisin, lots of oak, very good. its a little bit still, like some carbonation would pick it up, but its not insanely heavy anyway, which is wild. very well refined beer, and seemingly an awesome base stout for some special editions, coffee comes to mind but also like a toasted almond version, smores, those kinds of things. fantastic stuff here from this up and coming operation.
