Two British Bitters side by side with two dry English cheeses, a Mature Cheddar and a Red Leicester. Am I in heaven today?
One Bitter is Doom Bar; which I consider decent, but has an average rating of only "OK." And the other, of course, is 1909; which I consider a near-masterpiece in the bottled bitter world.
1909 Looks like I want to drink it, nice foam and deep golden-hued bod. Of course, it Smells mostly of malt; but blended richly to produce the higher ABV. Tastes are balanced well and, then, well-balanced. Balanced backward and forward. A blend achieved from a century+ recipe and lots of craftsmanship since. Full-mouthed and ever so smooth.
As for the excellent Overall Hugs, that's for the National Heritage Brewing Trust that focusses, at least for now, in preserving the treasures at Burton on Trent. The U.S. has brew museums, but mostly for tourists and chuggers. The NHBT seems to have this librarian/scholarly angle to it. Very British. May the NHBT become a cultural lodestone, at least for the 4 ingredients of beer. Cheers !
