from Untappd and probably the nano's website--
A New Zealand twist to the traditional hop-forward profile of a Hopfenweisse. Heavily dosed with local Pacifica, Rakau, and Motueka hops, it has big NZ hop character delivering notes of apricot, peach, and lime zest. The Hefeweizen yeast gives it a rich traditional German profile with lovely pear drop and banana esters. This bouquet of fruit flavours shines against a fluffy backdrop of wheat malt. The malt provides a subtle sweetness that balances the beer's smooth and crisp bitterness.

First, thanks to my new mate AzfromOZ for adding this interesting gypsy brewer who pal around with many of New Zealand's micros. My first from Small Gods, I went on their website to find what probably is a unique niche: they name their beers after mythological creatures. From Nordic legend, Fafnir does a bad thing (kills his father and steals his Hoard.) But his brother avenges and kills him. For popular expression, Fafnir also is thought to have inspired two of Tolkien's not-so-nice characters. But, the beer is nice.

Fafnir Looks the part of a hefe, big fluffy head but alas doesn't stick around. Smells are a panoply of fruit, citrus and apples/pears/apricots/peaches. Tastes are balanced, just enough bittering hops to counter the sweet fruit. Medium-mouthed but also soft like a hefe should be.

I will seek out Small Gods again and see what they are up to. Cheers !
