this is on tap now over at the new(er) spot on kalamath. its a cool beer, but the sweet potato doesnt really stand out as distinct, with the spice profile and the sweetness in here, it might as well just be another pumpkin beer. this may be a little more starchy and sweet, but there is really no appreciable difference from the potato compared to what the squash might add. orange and clear from the tap without too much head, smells malty sweet, a little earthy, fall spiced, and strong enough. the flavor is about the same, with a honey and caramel sweetness running all the way through it, the potato element sort of blended in there, not real vibrant, way behind the allspice and clove complexion, and with a little booze to cut the sweet in the end. its well carbonated, but sits a bit heavy in my gut, one pour was plenty. i like the idea of incorporating ingredients into seasonal beers like this, but on the other hand, if you are going to cover up what they add so much with residual sugar and spices, even if it tastes good, whats the point? a fine fall ale, but not a wonderful expression of sweet potato in beer. i liked it, but i was also left somewhat disappointed...
