Leaves are falling from trees. The air is getting crisp and chilly. Halloween is right around the corner. Despite the fact that we’ve just transitioned from summer into fall, up next in our Scratch Beer series is a style most commonly attributed to springtime – the Helles Bock. Essentially, the Helles Bock style is a Helles Lager brewed to bock strength. While as strong as a traditional bock in terms of alcohol content, a Helles is lighter in color and has a more substantial hop presence. Think of it as Troegenator’s feisty little brother. Interestingly enough, the Troegenator is a horned beast, and so is a Billy goat, an animal that has become synonymous with the bock style. One theory suggests that the traditional time to brew bock beer was under the sign of Capricorn (the goat) to ensure it would be ready for consumption by May. Whatever the case may be, you can rest assured that you won’t have to wait until springtime to fulfill your goat quota. Kick back a few pints of this authentic German style right here in our Tasting Room!

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours clear copper orange with a small half finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty trails of lace down the glass.

S - Smells of mildly toasted grain, light caramel and toffee sweetness and some very light booze. Kinda slow to develop but once it does it is pretty good.

T - Starts off with a mix of lightly toasted pils malt and some sweet fruitiness that fades away quickly, leaving the palate dried upon the finish. Simple, straight forward flavors that is pretty easy to consume.

M - Medium-Light body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, clean feel just like it should be.

O - Always nice to see another bock in the sea of hoppy beers from the scratch series. Overall it's a decent enough beer. It isn't my favorite from the series but it is still solid enough. Worth a shot if you get a chance.
