Beers – especially IPAs – brewed with hops from Australia and New Zealand are turning the heads of craft beer enthusiasts across the nation. We have dabbled with Galaxy hops in a few previous Scratch Beer offerings, but it is Scratch #122 that truly captures the essence of this wonderfully complex hop variety from “down under.” Its high alpha acid content and intense aromatics make Galaxy a perfect dual-purpose hop (for bittering and aroma). Boasting a broad bouquet and zesty flavor profile, Galaxy hops offer a virtual “produce stand” of tropical fruit diversity. Scratch #122 will overwhelm your palate with hints of sweet and tart passionfruit, ripe peach, lemon-lime, papaya, pineapple, and mango. If that doesn’t make you thirsty, we don’t know what will!

Growler shared by ffejherb, thanks buddy.

A - Pours golden straw yellow with a nice one and a half finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty streaks of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of juicy galaxy hops throughout, tropical fruit, bit of pine resin, fresh cut grass, bit of day old bread and some nice caramel malt sweetness to help balance some of the hops. The galaxy hops really shine in this one, just like they should.

T - Starts off with strong galaxy hop bitterness slowly giving way to hints of tropical fruit, pine, grass, fresh bread and backing caramel malt sweetness. Finish is a little watery with some lingering fruity bitterness. Very easy to consume with plenty of flavors going on.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Decent feel initially, goes a touch watery toward the end of the glass. I would prefer a little more body, could really help round this one out.

O - One of the more enjoyable scratch IPA's of recent memory. The galaxy hops really do their jobs well, offering everything they have to the party. Glad I got to try this one while it lasted.

Enjoyed from a growler over 45 minutes in an IPA glass; thanks so much for the delivery, Birdmarg741.

The pour is a clear yellow gold that shows off ample carbonation. Sticky, clumpy head foam lingers nicely and holds a constellation of fresh scents for a long retention time. Lacing is heavy and pretty.

Bunches of bright fruits jump up the nose coated in a thin shell of sweetness. Mango, pineapple, passionfruit and starfruit are the biggest players. Papaya jumps in before the earthen woods waft in, while peach rides along behind with a hint of bready malt and hazelnut. As it sits and warms, a marjoram / oregano essence becomes stronger…and is evident later in gulps.

The taste is surprisingly bitter right up front, sharp and bright, and lacking in flavor supports. It's clearly a single-hop brew, and as such, is lacking on the complexity of beta acids that Galaxy doesn't bring along. It's certainly good, though, with papaya and passionfruit holding the center after the first slicing bite goes by. It's still not very fruity in flavor, with those mediterranean herbs carrying much of the end of each swallow into a finish where some hop oils hold on to give a hint of length. Time and temperature make the taste more grainy and herbal--a nice counterpoint to the early tropical nose. As it goes, the taste profile leans heavily in the direction of a saison.

The body in conjunction with modest alcohol content make this brew nicely sessionable. It slides down easy, leaving a memory on the tongue, but not collecting heavily or off gassing booze or other volatiles. Just a touch more length would be nice, but the lighter malts and alpha-heavy hops won't deliver that.

Easy to enjoy on its own and with versatility alongside foodstuffs, I'd be happy to drink a lot of this baby. A fun experiment with hops really made for the dance they do in the nose…but the evolving taste experience is also a treat.

I was lucky enough to enjoy this beer on tap this afternoon when I stopped by the Troegs brewery and since I was the first to review this beer I thought that I would add a few notes.

A: Beautiful yellow color with a nice inch of foam. Poured to perfection in a 16 oz glass from the brewpub.

S: Strong fruity notes as well as earthy (cat-piss like) astringency.

T: Great tasting brew! Seemed influenced by Hill Farmstead. This brew was not as good (overall) as Abner or S+S but it is the only thing that I have ever tasted with the same flavor profile and appearance. If Troegs made this regularly for distribution I would buy it all the time.

M: Full, medium carbonation

O: A treat to be able to try this beer. Makes stopping at breweries an absolutely essential part of long rides in the car.

*I picked up a 12 pack of perpetual CANS on my way out of the brewery this afternoon - and they had many other brews available in cans. Staff said that they will begin distributing cans in the near future...I can only hope that we see some in Syracuse.
