Although we’ve brewed many a Scratch Lager in the past, we’ve yet to do a bona fide Vienna Lager. Until now, that is. Developed in 1841 by brewer Anton Dreher in Vienna, the style is coincidentally uncommon in Europe today. However, it gained notoriety during the early twentieth century in the United States and is generally referred to as “Pre-Prohibition Lager” in today’s beer lingo. The defining characteristic of a Vienna-style lager is its toasted malt flavor, which elicits hints of crusty bread or fresh baked biscuits. Traditionally, it is darker than most U.S. produced lagers, and boasts an attractive reddish-brown, copper-tinged coloration. Although it took us a while to finally brew this classic style, Scratch #129 is here for your enjoyment. When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

a: Somewhat cloudy copper color, served with a firm, bright white head.

s: Caramel sweetness, doughy bread, and just a trace of grassy hops.

t: Caramel forward with some sweet bread. A small hop bite and some warmth at the end. This got sweeter and less enjoyable as it warmed.

m: Surprisingly heavy feeling.

o: I don't know enough to say if this is an accurate representation of the style. This was good but not my cup of tea.

A- Really vibrant copper-colored body with crystal clear transparency. Frothy tan head that stays around and leaves some lacing behind.

S- Toasted malts, biscuity bread, caramel, dash of grassy hops.

T- Really as it smells, toasted malts, smooth caramel and bready flavors, some grassy hop bitterness.

M- Smooth and creamy, medium carbonation.

O- One of the stronger Vienna lagers I have had and this one has big flavor. Lots of toast and bready flavors, nice lager.

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours amber orange with a nice two finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving sticky rings of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of doughy cereal grains, caramel and toffee sweetness, dash of citric hops and some of the typical Tröegs house lager yeast.

T - Starts off with the cereal malt and the caramel and toffee sweetness slowly giving way to some light hop bitterness and some bready yeast. Finish is doughy with some light sweetness, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet, doughy feel from start to finish. I had little trouble finishing my glass.

O - A nice Vienna lager. It has pretty much everything I was expecting and it was pretty drinkable. Worth the try but nothing overly memorable.
