Scratch #152 features a complex assortment of malts including Abbey, CaraMunich, and Special B to give this Belgian Style Quad a rich, reddish hue and thick, caramelized sweetness. Once the high gravity wort made it to the kettle, we added a combination of Magnum hops for bittering and Saphir hops for a citrusy contrast to the caramel malts. Belgian Candi syrup and cane sugar was then added to bolster the ale’s sweetness and alcohol content, while dark chocolate and fresh raspberries were tossed in to put the proverbial “icing on the cake.” Finally, we pitched Abbey ale yeast for a complementary spicy balance. Savor this unique interpretation of a Belgian style that’s been enjoyed for generations.

Served in a tulip. Dark in color...deep brown, almost black....smells good but not as sweet as expected. The taste however is sweet although I would not say I tasted the raspberries, in fact, had you not told me the name I would not have thought the berries were there. Definitely a top notch quad though. Great flavor....went down very easy. Hope they stick it in a bottle so I can get it at home

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours deep dark brown with a small half finger tall off white head, quickly dissipating down to a very light film, leaving very little if any lace on the glass.

S - Smells of caramel and toffee sweetness, dark fruits, molasses, dark chocolate, candied sugar and some tart raspberries. Smells decent enough, the darker flavors start to crowd out the raspberries tho.

T - Starts off with some chalky dark chocolate powder and mild raspberry tartness quickly being joined by the dark fruits, candied sugar, caramel, toffee and bready Belgian yeast. Finish is still kinda chalky with a bit of tartness as well, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium-Heavy body with moderate carbonation. The chalky feel that has become common place in the chocolate beers has struck down yet another.

O - The flavors work decently well together but that chalky feel brings all the progress to screeching halt. Some people may like this one but I am not one of them.
