Belgian Pale Ales originally were brewed to compete with lighter, more popular Pilsners in Europe during WWII. They differ from other Pale Ale varieties in that they are typically not as bitter, and display very pronounced sweet malt overtones. We brewed Scratch #153 with Abbey malt and yeast to bring out the ale’s “Belgian” traits, while German Northern Brewer hops provide moderate bitterness and elicit hints of evergreen, mint, and woody tones. Despite Belgium’s recent disappointing World Cup loss last week, we’re sure this Belgian-style Pale Ale is a winner!

Served on-tap at the brewery.
A - Pours clear yellow with a decent one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light ring around the edge, leaving small trails of lace on the sides of the glass.
S - Smells of fruity Belgian yeast, pale malt, dulled black pepper, some toasted nuts, and some lightly toasted bread. Rather dull honestly.
T - Starts off with the chewy pale malt quickly being joined by the slightly fruity Belgian yeast, dulled spice and light sweetness. Finish has some prickly carbonation to go along with the overall bready quality, lingering long after the finish.
M - Light body with moderate carbonation. Yeasty, bready feel coats the palate.
O - I wish they would have added some extra hops of something to help spice this one up. As it is it is a rather uninspiring Belgian pale ale that is quite forgettable.
