One of the hallmarks of our Scratch Beer series is exploration. With Scratch #154, we crafted a single hop beer using an experimental hop variety. This time around, we’re working with the aptly named Mandarina Bavaria hop. As the name implies, this new German hop variety (a descendant of the Cascade) offers a pleasant citrus quality with a distinct tangerine note, giving this pale ale a straightforward yet balanced flavor. Juicy but not overly bitter, Scratch #154 continues our journey through the craft beer landscape and experimentation with the latest brewing ingredients.

Served at Al's of Hampden via cask firkin dry hopped w/ Cascade.
A - Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a two finger tall white head, very slowly dissipating down to a light film, leaving small bands of lace on the sides of the glass.
S - Smells of pale malt, fresh cut grass, a bit of pine resin and some light fruitiness. Not bad but it is pretty tame in all honestly, I was expecting more from those extra cascades.
T - Starts off with a bit of chewy pale malt quickly being joined by the mild hoppy flavors, made up mostly by the pine, fruit and grass. Finish is rather clean with a bit of bitterness and some light dryness, lingering for a little while after consumption.
M - Light body with moderate carbonation. Bitter, watery feel as most cask IPA's are these days threatens to ruin everything else.
O - A nice pale ale. As I said before, I was expecting more oomph from this one with the added hops but it never really materialized. I will give the regular version a shot when it comes out.
