Belgian Pale Ales originally were brewed to compete with lighter, more popular Pilsners in Europe during WWII. Although typically not as bitter as its hopped-up American counterpart, the Belgian Pale Ale displays prominent sweet and malty overtones. The use of Abbey yeast in Scratch #158 lends subtle hints of apple and light spice as well as a crisp, semi-dry finish. Dry hopping with Willamette, an excellent finishing hop, adds a lively bouquet of fresh-cut flowers, fruit, earth, and spice.

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours slightly hazy pale yellow with a small half finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light ring around the outer edge, leaving very small streaks of lace on the sides of the glass.

S - Smells really weird. The Abbey yeast clashes with the mild toast, caramel sweetness and earthy hops. Not a big fan of this so far.

T - Starts off with the spicy Abbey yeast that never really fades away. Hints of caramel, toasted bread, light fruitiness and dash of hop bitterness try and break up the yeast but they can only do so much. Finish is a bit chewy with some dryness, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium-Light body with moderate carbonation. It has a weird toasty yeasty feel that really gets in the way.

O - Not a fan of this one at all. The nose and taste are all over the place and the feel makes it hard to finish. Glad I didn't get a whole pour of this.

Had this on 2014-09-06 on-tap at the brewery.

Pretty decent amount of flavor for a sessionable beer. Noticeable Belgian yeast profile with some hop bitterness. Good but I'd rather have a Sunshine Pils.
