Our exploration of the brewing landscape endures with this latest Scratch Beer creation. With Scratch #163, we perpetuate our recurring series of single hop Pale Ales using a different experimental hop variety. This time, we’re playing with a hop simply known as “871.” Developed by the American Dwarf Hop Association (ADHA), “871” presents a varied range of flavors and aromas including soft floral and ripe citrus notes as well as strong herbal tones. An exercise in simplicity, Scratch #163 incorporates this lone, versatile hop with two classic malt varieties and our house ale yeast strain to deliver a sessionable, full-flavored Pale Ale. At 54 IBUs, it also packs a fairly substantial bitter punch.

Had this on 2014-10-25 at the brewery.
A - Clear golden-orange with a 2finger white head and very good lace.
S - Mild-moderate hop floral, pineapple and dankness. Just a hint of sweetness.
T - Grass/vegetal, lightly-toasted white bread, pineapple, herbal tea with a lemon flesh bitterness that is appropriate for a Pale Ale. Definitely not just bitter hop water.
M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Thankfully, not too thin. Some prickle. Very dry.
O - I like these low ABV APAs from Troegs. My favorite from them in this category is Scractch #140 but this #163 is fairly close. It was a refreshing compliment to my sandwich from their snack bar, which was porchetta on ciabatta with apple stuffing, brussels sprouts, mushrooms, cheddar and rye aioli. Their Master of Pumpkin beer with desert was also good, but that's another review.
