If ever there was a beer style that epitomizes the marvels of German brewing, it is the Helles Lager. “Helles” (a German word meaning “light”) is the perfect descriptor for this pale, straw-colored, thirst-quencher of a beer. With origins in Munich, Germany, the Helles style traditionally displays some characteristics of a Czech Pilsner such as a biscuity malt profile. However, the use of Saphir hops produces a sweet, citrusy bouquet with hints of tangerine and gentle spices. Humble in its execution, Scratch #164 manages to maintain a certain majestic charm in all its simplicity. The reward is a wonderful balance of rich, malty sweetness and a citrusy zing followed by a slightly dry yet very clean finish.

Served it alongside Korean food. The crispness complemented the spicy food very well with a clean finish.

Served on-tap at the brewery.
A - Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a light film of white head, quickly dissipating down to a light ring around the edge, leaving small streaks of lace on the glass.
S - Smells of lightly toasted sweet grains, dash of spicy hops and a tiny bit of fruitiness.
T - Starts off with plenty of sweet malt and lightly toasted grain slowly being joined by a bit of spicy noble hop and some faint fruitiness. Finish is a bit chewy with some light sweetness, not lingering for very long after consumption.
M - Medium-Light body with moderate carbonation. Smooth feel with some chewiness backing it up.
O - Another solid pale lager from the scratch series. I liked a few of the other from the past more but I will still gladly drink this.
