Our first Scratch offering for 2015, this Pale Ale features a hop variety known only as “06277.” However, the moniker “Nuggetzilla” has been applied to this potent gem of a hop John & Co. came across while walking the experimental hop fields in Yakima Valley. Just in its second year of growth, the bines were still young and small but the cones were sticky with oils. Rubbing them released pine resin, pineapple, and hints of strawberry. We brewed Scratch 168 exclusively with this hop helps us get to the core of its bittering, flavoring and aroma. “Whoa!” exclaimed John. “I’m diggin’ this one!” Although he wanted to take home the whole field, he thought enough for a few trial batches would suffice for the time being.

I enjoyed this on tap at the brewery served chilled in a wheat type tall ale glass.
The color is bright golden with amber hue and has very good clarity with white head and fine bead with some lace stickage. The smell has a slight malt nose with somewhat fruity yeast odor and mild herbal hop scent. The feel is slightly toasted with fruity tanginess and coarse bitter mid palate with medium high carbonation and slight resinous texture with gently earthy and dry finish.
The taste begins fruity with notes of berry and herbal hop flavors up front with a subtle malt sweetness and semi-dank hop flavor which is woody and spicy mid palate with a lingering hint of blueberry and pine. The flavor is hop dominated from mid taste into a long dry and bitter finish. Overall I consider this pretty decent but the experimental hops are a little over the top -pretty wild for the strength of this pale as far as bitterness/assertiveness level.

Served on-tap at the brewery. Pours clear golden yellow with a half finger tall white head, quickly dissipating to a light ring, leaving small streaks of lace on the glass.
Smells of grassy and piney hops, cereal grain, dash of citric fruit and some lightly toasted grain. Taste is similar with a bit less hops and a bit more grain to it. Finish is kinda chewy, lingering long after consumption. Hoppy, chewy feel from start to finish.
Overall a decent pale ale. Not the biggest fan of this hop, a bit non descript if you ask me. Nice to try but there are better beers on right now.
