Arguably more than any other beer, the Munich Helles Lager represents the deep-rooted tradition of German brewing. The word “Helles” (German for “light”) offers the perfect descriptor for this pale, straw-colored, thirst-quencher of a beer. With origins in Munich, Germany, the Helles style displays some attributes of a Czech Pilsner, such as its biscuity malt profile. Tettnang (a floral, slightly spicy German noble hop variety) lends itself to this traditional style, while Magnum hops add a touch of citrus fruit. Simple yet artistic, Scratch #173 offers an abundance of rich, malty sweetness with an underlying spicy citrus note, then finishes slightly dry and clean on the palate.

Served on-tap at the tasting room. Pours pale golden yellow with a one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light ring around the edge, leaving small streaks of lace on the glass.

Smells of pale malt, bit of sweetness, dash of grassy and spicy hops and some lightly toasted bread. Taste is pretty much the same with the pale malt and mild sweetness up front followed closely by the mild hop bitterness and some doughy bread. Clean, slightly bitter feel with some lingering chewiness.

Overall a pretty solid helles lager. It's flavors are balanced well and it is easy drinking.

Had this on 2015-02-27 in Columbia, PA from a growler filled at Troegs

A - Clear golden-yellow with a 2-finger pillowy white head and good lace.

S - Fresh baked bread, light lemon grass and a touch of floral. Appealing.

T - Much like the smell with even more bread, some light spice and light pepper, lemon citrus. Finishes with an ever-so-slight sourdough tang and moderate bitterness (perhaps a bit less than Sunshine Pils).

M - Light-medium body and medium-high carbonation yield a solid feel that dries quickly.

O - A very tasty Helles. They did this one right.

I enjoyed this at the Brewery on tap served chilled in a stange

The color is brilliant golden with great clarity and thick white head that settles to a ring of fine beads with good amount of lacing. Smell has a very nice hop character with herbal and floral quality with mild malt sweetness in the smell. The feel has a malt presence that is dry with medium high carbonation with low sweetness and gentle bitterness with crisp dry finish without any noticeable alcohol.

The taste has mostly malt dominant and gentle German yeast influence with light hops in the middle with low sweetness into the gentle earthy and dry flavor with slight spice as it finishes. Overall I consider this a great lager -very enjoyable, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Helles or any type of pale lager.
