Beer enthusiasts have no doubt heard of the Irish Red Ale, a style that originated in early 18th Century Ireland, as well as the American Red Ale, a hopped-up variation on the style. We’re always looking to put the Tröegs stamp on existing beer styles, and Scratch #176 straddles the line between Irish and American, with a bit of German thrown in for good measure. Brewed with three malt varieties including the complex, robust Vienna malt, this Red Ale exhibits a pleasant toasty character amid sweet traces of caramel and toffee. To crank up the bitterness a few notches, we’ve hopped with German Northern Brewer and Saphir hops, adding a minty, citrusy zest and some additional IBUs. The resulting beer successfully unifies three distinct brewing cultures into a single beer – a Red Ale for the craft beer drinker from either side of the Atlantic!

Served on-tap in the tasting room. Pours Amber red with a half finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light ring around the edge, leaving small streaks of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smells of mildly toasted grains, light grassy and citric hops, bit of spice and plenty of caramel and toffee sweetness. Taste has the spices and sweetness up front slowly being joined by the toasty grains, light hop bitterness and a faint hint of the booze. Pretty standard feel with the sweetness up front and a dry finish.
Overall a decent Irish red I guess. It has some nice things going for it but it left me wanting a little something extra.
