Scratch #183 represents our further examination of the Session IPA style. It has been a recent endeavor of ours to pack as much flavor and aroma into a beer while keeping the ABV to a minimum. To achieve this, we’ve introduced a new breed of American hop known as Azacca, which elicits a variety of tropical aromas and flavors found in recent New Zealand varietals such as mango, pineapple, and tangerine. Pairing Azacca with one of favorite hops, Chinook, incorporates a wealth of sticky pine resin into the mix. The addition of oats softens the mouthfeel and lends a somewhat slick texture, which complements the natural oils found in the hops. Although it won’t weigh you down, the juicy smack of hops found in Scratch #183 will definitely leave a mark across your palate.

Served in a pint glass at the Union Brewhouse in Weymouth.
Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pale yellow color with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.
Smell: Light tropical and piney hops followed by toasted, bready, oats, and pale malts.
Taste: Hops and malt blend well together. Light all around, some chewiness, and light bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied, crisp, refreshing, a little chewy, light bitterness, crushable, and medium carbonation.
Overall: Got to say that these light IPA'S are growing on me. As the weather gets warmer, this style will be revisited a lot.

Served on-tap at the brewery. Pours clear golden yellow with a thin film of white head, quickly dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving little to no lace on the glass.
Smells of dulled citric fruit, some pine resin and fresh cut grass, lightly toasted grains and the typical Troegs ale yeast. Taste is pretty much the same with hop bitterness front and center followed closely by the mild fruitiness and slightly chewy grains. Fruitiness definitely comes out the more it sits in the glass. Smooth, bitter feel from start to finish makes this one very easy to consume.
Overall an ok session IPA. They have definitely made better versions of this beer in the past.
