When In DoubtWhen In Doubt
Notes: Arguably more than any other beer style, the Helles Lager represents the deep-rooted tradition of German brewing. The word “Helles” (German for “light”) offers the perfect descriptor for this pale, straw-colored, thirst-quencher of a beer. With origins in Münich, the Helles Lager style displays certain key attributes of a Czech Pilsner, such as its biscuity malt profile. Tradition hops lend subtle bitterness with hints of wildflowers, earthy spices, and soft herbs. Subtle yet flavorful enough to make for an enjoyable session, When In Doubt Lager will alleviate any uncertainty you’ve got when reaching for your next beer.

Hazy copper orange in color with a pillow of stark white foam on top that takes its sweet time dissapating and lacing the glass as it goes. Soft bread and biscuit notes in the nose play nicely with some floral notes. Pleasant aroma. The floral notes shine through on first taste, followed by a classic pilsner malt that cleans up the back end nicely. Lingers just a touch in the aftertaste after a smooth, clean finish. Nice full mouthfeel for a 4.3% beer and makes you wonder how they accomplished that. Really well rounded beer here that makes for a very enjoyable experience.

Clear light yellow in color with just a faint haze. Big soapy white head; good retention and lacing.

Vegetal hops, bell pepper flesh, honey, bread crust, and grass on the nose.

Delicate honey and bread crust sweetness balanced against bell pepper, grass, hay and clover notes from the hops. Crisp and clean with just a slight white pepper bitterness.

Medium-light mouthfeel, but not watery in the slightest. Feels more like 5-5.5% than 4.3%. Well carbonated and slightly oily, but clean and crisp.

A fantastic Helles lager. Troegs did a knock-out job here.

This is one mighty impressive beer, and imo the kind that makes it worth picking up the pack just to get. Deeply bready and fuller than it's 4.3% would suggest, highlighted by hints of zesty lime peel hops and the slightest touch of DMS; perfectly balanced on the finish with just the right snap of clean bitterness; starts malty yet finishes dry. Muscular yet nimble.

I was expecting something good from this beer. Troegs exceeded it. One of the best American brewed Helles I can remember having.

Pronounced German/Czech taste. Nice clear, golden pour. The malt presence is heady--the big biscuit! In fact, with such a bold flavor profile, it was surprising to see the abv clock in at only 4.3%. This is a nice hearty refreshing choice--and sessionable!

Clear straw colored, white head. Aroma of mild pale malt and earthy. Clean grainy taste, crisp, refreshing to drink a can out in the sun and breeze. Thinner bodied.

Pours a straw color with well over a finger of head. The nose reminds me far too much of an AAL. The flavor profile is biscuity, as expected. The body seems light to me, even considering the style.

On draft at Blue Coast, Rehoboth, DE. Enjoyed it with a delicious crab stuffed branzino meal.

Pours a clear pale straw color with visible carbonation. A moderate head quickly dissipates and yields a thin layer of film and lacing.

The aroma is mostly clean. As the drink warms, there are some notes of cracker and lightly toasted malt. There is little to no discernible hops aroma.

Medium to light bodied with a crisp mouthfeel and moderate lively carbonation. Clean and balanced flavors that open with dry cracker and toasted malts. As the drink warms, a modest amount of malt sweetness opens up. The hops provide a clean and gentle bitterness and enough spice for balance. Hops flavors of lemon and grass keep things interesting. The finish is dry and clean.

A well done Helles that is crisp, refreshing and true to style.

Best By 4/9/20.

A - Medium gold color with perfect clarity and a frothy white layer of creamy foam. Carbonation is moderate and steady.

S - Light honey malt with a small amount of graininess and light earthiness.

T - Pale malt graininess that's a little cereal-like with light earthy citrus. Malty in the beginning, balanced in the middle, and finishes with a lingering earthy spice and citrus bitterness.

M - Thick mouthfeel with alot of prickly carbonation, dry on the back of the palate and wet at the tip.

O - Very easy drinking with a nice hoppy bite at the end.

Poured into a pilsner glass: color is straw, good white to bright white head with fine bubbles, minimal lacing on the glass sides, thin lingering top.

Smell is bread/biscuit, touch of grape, herbal/earthy hops.

Taste follows with bread/biscuit, light grape like sweetness, then pleasant hop flavor with herbal, earthy, and spicy notes.

Mouthfeel is crisp, but moderate carbonation, good sweet/bitter balance but clean and refreshing.

Overall this is an excellent helles with good malt and hop flavors and super sessionable abv.

Dirty golden body with two fingers of white foam. Smells in between styles, namely pilsner and helles, with pilsner malt, helles breadiness, some straw, honey, pear, lemon and biscuit. Taste is more helles like with breadiness and honey up front, but the straw and fruit zest come in by the finish with the biscuit pilsner malts. Feel is light but not bright, smooth but has texture, but lacks some gravity to ground the breadiness for a long period of the sip. Ok

Pours a clear straw yellow with nice head, good retention and lacing. Smell is restrained, but some bready malts with a hint of spicy, floral hops. Really nice doughy malts on the sip, with a touch of sweetness that turns into a crisp finish with some floral and a touch of black pepper and honey. Feel is medium light, with strong carbonation that can be seen as a stream of bubbles rising continuously. Overall a very tasty Helles and extremely drinkable at 4.3%. Well done and I will look for this one again.

Part of the Greeting From Troegs Sampler Pack (2019)

Pours a nice, clear golden color with a 1-2 finger white, fluffy head. Not too much aroma to speak of, but very crisp and light in flavor. Goes down very easy on a warm, Summer day. Great with various BBQ foods.

Would definitely enjoy this again and again. . .

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) into a conical pint glass; best by 09/26/19.
A: Pours a crystal, golden color with a two to three finger, foamy, lemon-white head, rim retention, but rings of sticky lacing.
S: Aromas derived from grasses, barley grain, and light lemon.
T: Dry. Palate follows the nose, but much more lemony. Light, but very evident, bitterness provides a crisp finish.
M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: A very flavorful and approachable German Helles.

Golden yellow in color with very good clarity. Poured with a moderate, soapy white foam with very good retention. Clean pilsner and light bready malt aromas. nice golden yellow body with good white head leaving lacing all the way through the drink. medium amount of carbonation.

Good bready, biscuity aroma

a little bit of the bread comes through in the taste, faintly bitter.

medium on the mouth, clean faintly sour finish.

overall, this is a good solid Helles Lager. very drinkable, clean, and at 4.6 extremely sessionable. Good addition to the brewery draft list..

I tried this on tap at the Tröegs tasting room, served chilled in a stange.
see my edit below for clarification of review below

The color is a brilliant golden with very good clarity and small rising bubbles rise rapidly to a white head with fine bead and very good retention while lace sticks.
The smell has German malt aroma with slight bready odor light yeast mineral ester with subtle toasted type grain smell with herbal hop accent. The feel is decent with medium body and moderate carbonation with light sweetness and toasted malt texture with mild bitterness and semi-dry finish.

This tastes very lager-like with mainly a pilsner malt flavor which has a mild mineral quality with German lager yeast flavor and light hops- could be Ale yeast flavor with the lagering smoothing it out adding some mild pils funkiness accentuated malt quality while it finishes more on the dry side. I liked this it is very much like a Helles, not much yeast character except to augment the malt with almost no hop flavor, but drinkable in general for a malty ale/lager hybrid I would try this again if it was bottled/canned.
