When In DoubtWhen In Doubt
Notes: Arguably more than any other beer style, the Helles Lager represents the deep-rooted tradition of German brewing. The word “Helles” (German for “light”) offers the perfect descriptor for this pale, straw-colored, thirst-quencher of a beer. With origins in Münich, the Helles Lager style displays certain key attributes of a Czech Pilsner, such as its biscuity malt profile. Tradition hops lend subtle bitterness with hints of wildflowers, earthy spices, and soft herbs. Subtle yet flavorful enough to make for an enjoyable session, When In Doubt Lager will alleviate any uncertainty you’ve got when reaching for your next beer.

Poured into a pilsner glass: color is straw, good white to bright white head with fine bubbles, minimal lacing on the glass sides, thin lingering top.

Smell is bread/biscuit, touch of grape, herbal/earthy hops.

Taste follows with bread/biscuit, light grape like sweetness, then pleasant hop flavor with herbal, earthy, and spicy notes.

Mouthfeel is crisp, but moderate carbonation, good sweet/bitter balance but clean and refreshing.

Overall this is an excellent helles with good malt and hop flavors and super sessionable abv.

12 oz can. Pours golden with tall, long lasting, fluffy, white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of bready malt and grassy hops. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Herbal hops dominate the palate with bready malt in the background. Finish is long and very dry. Very nice brew.

Dirty golden body with two fingers of white foam. Smells in between styles, namely pilsner and helles, with pilsner malt, helles breadiness, some straw, honey, pear, lemon and biscuit. Taste is more helles like with breadiness and honey up front, but the straw and fruit zest come in by the finish with the biscuit pilsner malts. Feel is light but not bright, smooth but has texture, but lacks some gravity to ground the breadiness for a long period of the sip. Ok

Pours a clear straw yellow with nice head, good retention and lacing. Smell is restrained, but some bready malts with a hint of spicy, floral hops. Really nice doughy malts on the sip, with a touch of sweetness that turns into a crisp finish with some floral and a touch of black pepper and honey. Feel is medium light, with strong carbonation that can be seen as a stream of bubbles rising continuously. Overall a very tasty Helles and extremely drinkable at 4.3%. Well done and I will look for this one again.

Part of the Greeting From Troegs Sampler Pack (2019)

Pours a nice, clear golden color with a 1-2 finger white, fluffy head. Not too much aroma to speak of, but very crisp and light in flavor. Goes down very easy on a warm, Summer day. Great with various BBQ foods.

Would definitely enjoy this again and again. . .

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) into a conical pint glass; best by 09/26/19.
A: Pours a crystal, golden color with a two to three finger, foamy, lemon-white head, rim retention, but rings of sticky lacing.
S: Aromas derived from grasses, barley grain, and light lemon.
T: Dry. Palate follows the nose, but much more lemony. Light, but very evident, bitterness provides a crisp finish.
M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: A very flavorful and approachable German Helles.

Pours a clear golden amber with a white head.

Brite lemon grass and fresh grain in the nose backed by toast and bitter herb

Taste is bitter lemon with whole grain notes flowing into sweet malt toast flavor. It finishes dry with bitter herb notes.

Golden yellow in color with very good clarity. Poured with a moderate, soapy white foam with very good retention. Clean pilsner and light bready malt aromas. Medium light bodied with medium carbonation and a light smooth feel through the middle. Medium pilsner and bready flavors followed by medium light, herbal hop bitterness. Light herbal hop flavor near the end followed by crisp, clean finish and light reminders of bready malty and herbal hops. Perfectly balanced, light, tasty, crisp and clean. Fantastic.

on tap at the brewery yesterday. This beer is now considered year round on draft only, so should be unretired.

nice golden yellow body with good white head leaving lacing all the way through the drink. medium amount of carbonation.

Good bready, biscuity aroma

a little bit of the bread comes through in the taste, faintly bitter.

medium on the mouth, clean faintly sour finish.

overall, this is a good solid Helles Lager. very drinkable, clean, and at 4.6 extremely sessionable. Good addition to the brewery draft list..

Had this at the tasting room at Troegs in Hershey. Pours a nice pale, straw color. Very floral with notes a baked goods. Definitely has those notes of malt as well. A very sessionable beer. Would be great if this one was still around this summer.

I tried this on tap at the Tröegs tasting room, served chilled in a stange.
see my edit below for clarification of review below

The color is a brilliant golden with very good clarity and small rising bubbles rise rapidly to a white head with fine bead and very good retention while lace sticks.
The smell has German malt aroma with slight bready odor light yeast mineral ester with subtle toasted type grain smell with herbal hop accent. The feel is decent with medium body and moderate carbonation with light sweetness and toasted malt texture with mild bitterness and semi-dry finish.

This tastes very lager-like with mainly a pilsner malt flavor which has a mild mineral quality with German lager yeast flavor and light hops- could be Ale yeast flavor with the lagering smoothing it out adding some mild pils funkiness accentuated malt quality while it finishes more on the dry side. I liked this it is very much like a Helles, not much yeast character except to augment the malt with almost no hop flavor, but drinkable in general for a malty ale/lager hybrid I would try this again if it was bottled/canned.

9/5...brewery draft. "Insanely drinkable." Light gold, clear, some foam. Straw nose. Clean taste. Though with a slight fruitiness. Clean crisp finish, very good. Perfect summer kolsch style ale.

Had this on 2015-08-29 in Columbia, PA from a fresh growler purchased at the brewery yesterday. Had it again on 2016-01-07 from a fresh 12oz bottle. Again on 2018-07-13 at the brewery on-tap. There was also a run of cans at this time and I bought 2 cases, which lasted me into 2019.

A - Hazy straw-yellow with a 3-finger pillowy white head and moderate lace.

S - Pears, white grapes, grass, bread.

T - Much like the smell but with more emphasis on the bread first, then the pear and grape. There are nice, spicy noble hop flavors mid taste, which flow into a mild bitterness that balances with a sourdough flavor lingering briefly into the aftertaste.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Crisp and very refreshing; particularly after hiking 16 miles today along the Susquehanna River.

O - Good enough to be in the summer season rotation. It was available in bottles earlier in the week but I was out of town and by the time I got to the brewery yesterday evening; they were gone. Too bad. This would be worth keeping on hand for some thirst-quenching goodness in the summer.

Note: On 2018-07-13 I was able to purchase a case of 12oz cans at the brewery.
