Amber Ales tend to explore one end of the beer spectrum (sweet, malty, and toasty) to the other (floral, bright, and hoppy). With Scratch #232, we’ve aimed to create a darker, more robust Amber Ale while still maintaining a bold hop presence. The substantial grain bill incorporates notes of toffee, toasted bread, and fresh baked biscuits, while two of our favorite hop varieties – Columbus and Nugget – provide a wash of pine, fresh cut flowers, and earthy spices across the palate. The addition of experimental Idaho 7 hops lends hints of peach tea and summer fruit as well as a dry, peppery finish.

Look: It pours amber with a brown head. It is fairly clear with some lacing.
Smell: It has aromas dominated by citrus with some fruity esters, cherry.
Taste: It has a rich malt caramel taste with citrus and floral flavors. It also has some spice and low nut and roast flavors.
Feel: It has a medium body that is moderately bitter in the finish. The bitterness lingers.
Overall, it is a hop forward malty balanced amber with a lingering bitter finish.

Interesting blend of ingredients and, for me, it wasn't a great combo. Nice, just not great. I had an unappealing aftertaste that just lingered in my mouth.

12oz bottle purchased via sixpack at the brewery. This beer...I swear Troegs is trolling all of us. The last scratch bock I had from them did not look like a bock at all unless it was a maibock, now this could be further from being an amber ale. Poured into a tulip the appears more of a chestnut brown to black than amber in color with a yellowish stained khaki cap that fades leaving patchy lace.
This smells herbal and hoppy with a fruity accent before toasty bready grains. The taste is bitter and resinous with herbal to piney hops but there is a solid bready biscuit character of the grain that gets slightly caramel to toffee sweetness across the back.
This is medium in body with moderate carbonation. I have no idea what they were going for here or what beers they accidentally blended together to call this a scratch but its no amber ale. Maybe they mislabeled this? Its more of a hoppy brown than anything. Whatever its over, no need to try this again. Wait, maybe thats what imperial means? Imperial colored amber? I dont know.
