Kellerbiers are one my favorite styles and it seems like no one makes them anymore, at least not stateside. Troegs is an excellent lager brewer so I didn't hesitate to pick up a growler of this.
The growler was poured yesterday and consumed about 26 hours later.
The pour is exemplary for the style: very pale yellow with the slightest haze and an incredibly large and retentive head that you need a knife to cut through.
Smells, again, near-perfect for the style: verdant and herbaceous, like a walk through a field at dusk in late spring. Lively, but delicate. It smells like it's alive. Like an eco system.
The flavor, alas, is good, but not so great as the aroma. Grass, hay, and nature in the front end, some sweetness in the middle, and then some European hops on the back end that are a bit too bitter, a bit too heavy, which leads a grainy finish that's a bit ashen and heavy that kind of weighs down the front end. Again, it tastes very good. It's just not quite among the very best I've ever had.
