Notes:
A slightly hazy IPA dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado featuring notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear, and melon.
The path to Field Study began with our small-batch, experimental Scratch Series, the same starting point for our recent Double IPA LolliHop.
“Field Study began life as Scratch #327, when we first started tinkering with some new hopping techniques,” explains Tröegs brewmaster John Trogner. “We built on those experiments over the next few Scratch releases and landed on a grain bill featuring a backbone of local Rustic Pale Malt.” Rustic Pale is grown in Mount Joy, PA, about 15 miles from the brewery and malted by Double Eagle near Philadelphia.
With the malt bill in place, Trogner and his team focused on hop selection, fine-tuning the beer’s recipe. “After a few trials, we finally arrived at what we think is a winning combination for Field Study – Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado.”

12oz can served in a tulip glass. Date stamp on bottom: 18:25 220408-806. Freshest by 08/12/2022.
Appearance: Golden yellow, with a bit of haze. Thin white persistent head with persistent strands of lacing.
Smell: Grapefruit, orange, mango, and something else. Peach? Melon? Not sure.
Taste: Citrus up front with some mango, then light malt for balance (a bit cracker-like, just barely there), and then sharply bitter finish with some grapefruit / citrus bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, just right thickness, a bit sticky on the teeth, dry finish.
Overall / Drinkability: I think I would describe this as delicately hoppy. Hops certainly dominate the flavor, but they're not very strong, and you can pick out distinct flavors - other than the one I couldn't pick out in the smell. A sipping and savoring beer, but I'm finding just one is enough. It's somehow a bit less than the sum of its parts at the end.

Pours a clear gold. Thin foam. Sweet lemon aroma. Citrus hop body. Lightly sweet. Finishes slightly bitter. Easy drinking. I'd study this any day

Love Troegs and so happy I picked up a new mix 15 pack. All good stuff in there. Field Study is one of those kind of old school IPAs that BA and hazebros don’t get excited for but are very well made. This one pours gold, not quite clear but not murky. Smells lightly of citrus. Taste is of citrus fruits, light bitterness. Very smooth but light. 6.2% is very quaffable by IPA standards and this one goes down easily.

12 oz bottle from Pennsylvania ($2 -- refrigerated at the Acme in Media). Just purchased but already some days past the August 2021 BB printed on the label. It still seems plenty fresh.
Appearance. This has a slightly hazy, pale golden body with an excellent white head. The aroma is more piney and dank than I'd prefer but tasting reveals a flavor that has more tropical fruit notes. Moderate bitterness for the style.
Mouthfeel. Crisp and dry with medium+ carbonation in a near medium body.

From a 12oz bottle date freshest by 9/10/21 into a pint glass.
Pours a slightly hazy pale brownish yellow with about one finger of white head. That dissipates quickly leaving a thin white cap. Moderate lacing.
Picking up mostly sweet floral notes on the nose. Maybe just a bit of citrus.
Sweet floral notes in the taste along with some dank earthy notes as well. Touch of onion.
Medium-bodied slightly sticky mouthfeel. Low to moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter aftertaste.
Overall, very interesting but probably not interesting enough to drink more than the three I got in the mix pack.

A nice, capably brewed IPA. The pour is muddy gold, a little hazy, with an average amount of carbonation. Dry-hopping Citra and Mosaic with El Dorado delivers fruit (grapefruit, pear) and a dry bite and finish. Kind of a middle ground--moderately aggressive, ultimately satisfying.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into pint glass in July 24, 2021. There is a "Freshest By" date of 09/10/2021 on the bottle.
Appearance: Light gold color with 2 finger white head. It is slightly hazy, but less hazy than New England IPAs. Head lasts a minute, and there is a little lacing.
Smell: Strong aroma from the hops as expected in an IPA: mostly pine and grapefruit, Also some sweetness like pineapple. Overall the pine and citrus aroma dominates the other aromas.
Taste: There is a medium hops flavor that is more refreshing than bitter. Very fruity and contains flavors of grapefruit, citrus, pine, and a little sweetness as well. This is less bitter than Troeg's Perpetual IPA, which I like better. The Field Study has as a nice after taste. Overall a nice balance and very drinkable. You can drink multiple bottles, as compared to more bitter or stronger IPAs.
Mouthfeel: Low/Medium bodied. Medium alcohol which matches the 6.2% listed.
This is an interesting IPA. It has a nice mix of citrus, hops, and other flavors, which makes it interesting. I prefer the stronger flavors and higher bitterness of Troeg's Perpetual IPA over this lighter Field Play IPA. This has some hop bite, but not as much as some other IPAs. It is very drinkable, and I would drink this on hotter days and could drink more of these than the stronger IPAs. Good IPA, and I would buy this again.

(12 oz can, freshest by 08/18/2021; purchased cold as part of 15-can mix pack... poured into a tall lager glass similar to that shown used on their website)
L: fairly-clear, jade-tinged gold liquid, mild haze; tall, rocky, sponge-like foam, collapsing slow, clinging in drifts and peaks... random clusters of thin lace pebbles
S: pithy, flesh-speckled orange/grapefruit/mango, floral-perfumy fresh-cut capsicum, citrus lip balm... dominant herbal-floral green plant overtone as the head falls
T: dry mango-orange blend with a touch of dark grape/berry; grapefruit pithy bitterness with leafy, peppery, mildly-spicy (ginger-like) accents... dry, almost mute, lager-like malt base; arguably an oat character lingers more over the base pale in the aftertaste
F: the pour knocked much of the carbonation out, leaving a mildly-silky, resinous envelope to its light body... finish sports a touch of chili-like heat, mostly via the pungent bitter ping from the hops, but also a subtle surge of ethanol
O: much to like here, but overall it's a muddy affair; is it best enjoyed with food?... this, despite being a characteristically well-executed Troegs brew, perhaps more than any other example/permutation of an IPA featuring these hops typifies my boredom with these said hops, specifically the Citra-Mosaic (and oat) combo... yawn (1784)

Out of a tap and into a clear pint glass it came. It's a rather dense and dull solid amber. The proper half-inch white head receded to a film quickly. There's a good fresh aroma to be had, bringing both sufficient malt and hop goodness. Plenty of body carries a good brew mild in both sweetness and hop bite. Good glass lacing follows the liquid to the bottom of the glass. With such a nice balance, supple body, mild hop presence and very little notice of alcohol, the bottom on the glass is reached rather quickly.

Yellow with some chill haze, nice white head, awesome retention and lace
Pineapple, mango, pear, berries, pine, slight dank aromas
A lot of the flavors echo the aroma, there is a hint of earth and smoke?
Light bodied and appropriately carbonated
Pretty dope IPA for a hot day. Would be great for a cook out

Sun-bleached straw yellow with an ever so slight "haze" (may just be marketing in this case, let's be honest) and a rocky foam head. Stick my nose in and I'm to the point where I can pick out citra hops. So that's neat. Mango, citrus; smells pretty nice. Taste is muted grape and melon and lemon. Mouthfeel is just odd. There's like almost zero body. Far too carbonated. And it leaves a slightly slimy film on the tongue. Weird. And that's the best word to describe this. Not my jam.

I know the catty, NZ Sauvignon Blanc thing is still all the rage (much to my chagrin) but this beer legitimately tastes like cat-urine-flavored-water to me. There's a total lack of body to support the hop character, the mouthfeel is thin and I find the finish to be genuinely unpleasant. This beer tastes like an uninspired SMaSH brew with aggressive dry-hopping but zero malt backbone support. There's a gaping hole, metaphorically speaking, in the middle of this beer. Were the brewers allergic to caramel/crystal malts here? To be clear, I love dry beers; in fact, bone-dry saison is my favorite style. In this case, the major fault is not that the beer is dry but rather that the beer is completely out of balance.
I was underwhelmed with this beer to the extent that I brought my BA account back from the dead just to put this review out there. Despite what my handle might suggest I live in PA and while I'm all about supporting local breweries I think I'm done with Troegs.
Points off for 'look' because the beer's description mentions haze yet my pour was clear as a bell. I couldn't care less about haze but if you include a physical characteristic in a beer's description and don't deliver on it...that's amateur brewing. To boot, the last Troegs beer I had before this (Joyous) was overtly oxidize despite being within BB date. I can only hope that Troegs steps up their game.
