The muse for Joyous is a fresh and bright yeast strain called Hothead Kveik. We harmonize with its vibrant tropical profile through a combination of aromatic Citra, Sabro and Azacca hops. With soft notes of tangelo, juicy papaya and subtle coconut, this refreshing IPA tops our list of sure signs that another joyous spring has sprung.

10/1/21...cloudy orange copper with fading white foam. Citrus tropical fruits. Smooth mellow malt bitter, fresh fruit. Well blended. Orange peels reside in the back. Latent toffee. Nice.

Poured an opaque murky orange brown with a one finger white frothy head that dissipated quickly to a thin film. I have not had a beer that looked like this. It reminds me of dark butterscotch. Good thing I like butterscotch! Light lacing was present. I think the look has affected my sense of smell because it seems that among the grassy notes in the aroma, there is an underlying scent of butter. The taste has a bunch of grass with some papaya and other tropical fruit. I cannot detect coconut that the brewer mentions. This is not very hoppy. Moderate - full bodied with light carbonation and a slight slick feel. This is definitely different but enjoyable.

12oz bottle purchased from the fridge as part of a mix-a-six pack for $11.99. "Freshest by 05/26/21" so this is a little bit past its prime.
Look: Has a very murky amber/brown color to it. Honestly, does not look so appetizing. It almost looks like the beer has oxidized, but this could just be the way that it is supposed to look. The head has dissipated to almost nothing.
Smell: Has a candied orange / marmalade sweetness up front on the nose. I also get bright lemon peel, a prominent coconut note, as well as some caramel malt. The finish has a touch of bitterness to it. Overall, a nice nose.
Taste: Interesting. These flavors actually work pretty well together, even if the beer may be a bit oxidized. It has this orange and apricot fruit roll up perception to me, which finishes with woody coconut and a mild pithy and piney bitterness. The finish is also a bit spicy and peppery. There is a nice biscuity and carmelly malt component, as well as a bit of acidity that helps to balance out the sweetness. My grandmother used to make these dessert bars that was a shortbread like cookie with a layer of apricot preserves on top and then I think that it had shortbread crumbs and nuts sprinkled on top...if you added some coconut and maybe drizzled some caramel on top, then that's pretty much what this beer tastes like. There's something that still tastes a bit weird to me about this beer, but overall I think that it is enjoyable. There is a lot of sweetness to it, so I probably would not want to drink more than one in a session. I also get a bit of heat in my throat, which is surprising since it is only 6.5% ABV.
Feel: Mouthfeel is medium with above average carbonation.
Overall: I think that this is a creative and different approach from the standard, and it definitely gives a different flavor profile from most of the other beers that are being made right now. Kudos to Troegs for using a different yeast strain and non-traditional malt base.

Very weird IPA experience pours a very murky Brown weird because I expected more of a bright orange Amber from the label. Smell is malt forward a bit of hops and taste is equally as disappointing a bit better with a fairly smooth finish. Overall I would skip this one and just wait for some fresh nugget nectar

Spring is in the air! Not really, it's 30 degrees and snowing. Oh well. I'll stay inside and try a Joyous IPA. The look of the beer exemplifies spring days like these: muddy. It is a dense light brown that might be a result of it's unique strain of yeast. Smells of mild papaya and other tropical fruits, as advertised. These characteristics are also present in the flavor. The flavor is a little bit of everything. A little citrus, a little hoppy, a little malty. There is no aspect of this beer that shines out, but there is nothing I can complain about. I actually prefer it to Troegs' Perpetual IPA. Though a day may appear dreary, there are plenty of happenings that can make it basically ok.

This doesn't look good. It has the big fluffy white head now associated with blandness being starched into an IPA. Checking the ingredients, there's no wheat included, usually the suspected offender. The color is a very dirty and murky dark amber that's almost the color of dull rust. All this is determined after two 12 oz. brown bottles were emptied into a clear glass liter mug. The smell is mostly grassy, amazingly grassy, with some sort of sweet character. The taste also brings that grassy element, somehow. Unfortunately, that doesn't make for a great ale. The auxiliary flavors, like a sweet malt, some earthiness and bitterness help salvage this brew. That the finish is clean and mostly bitterly dry is even more redeeming. This is one peculiar tasting AIPA, points given for its uniqueness. Perhaps multiple tastings would give the taste buds a chance to adapt to what this offers, but until then, well, this is weird. At least, it's not bland.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Best by 5/27/21, so plenty fresh.
Dark murky orange body. Small white head persists in good form throughout, leaving scattered lacing.
Dull mixed fruit aroma.
On tasting, clean, fruity, faintly watery, even fainter bitterness.
Mouth between medium and full, finish a dull juiciness.
Overall, seems more of a NE IPA than standard ipa. Okay, but Troegs does much better than this.

L- Murky orange with minimal lingering head.
S- Orange peel, caramel, and herbal notes.
T- Malty flavors in good balance with orange and herbal hop flavors.
F- Medium to medium full body. A little less carbonation than I would have liked.
O- A pretty tasty brew. The strong malt backbone of this beer makes it a good divergence from the current main stream hazy IPA.
