Hoist up the sails! We’ve charted another course for a Double IPA, this time in collaboration with NY-based Sloop Brewing Company. Flaked oats combine with pilsner and pale malts to provide the backbone and hazy gold hue of Sloop John T. But the guiding stars of this 8% ABV ale are Citra, Columbus and Lotus hops, bringing waves of sweet citrus and mixed berry notes to the helm.

Malt: Carapils, Flaked Oats, Pale, Pilsner
Hops: Citra, Columbus, Lotus
Yeast: London 3

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a double IPA with Columbus, Citra, and Lotus hops. No ABV is listed. It's poured a very hazy orange body beneath a thumb's width of lightly yellowed off-white foam. There's visible particulate in suspension, and it looks like yeast or proteins as opposed to hops. The aroma is interesting. I'm getting old school "C" hops, a fresh fruitiness that's hard to pinpoint, and sweet malt. On to the taste then... well that's unusual! I've never had a beer quite like this so it looks like the hop combination worked. The malt is sweet and bready with a touch of golden caramel and a hint of honey, and the hops are berry-like, tropically fruity, softly piney, and a touch earthy and spicy. It's really interesting. It delivers different notes as you go through it. One time around I might get pine followed by berries, honeyish/caramelish/bready malt, and then citrus with orange and vanilla, and finally spiciness and earth, and another time around those things might be in a different order. The alcohol has a presence but it doesn't really stand out. The mouthfeel is as you might expect from a strong, malty, and hazy double IPA with a medium body and gently crisp-then-smooth carbonation. It's the hops that make this one different, and they actually work really well together. Nicely done.

Pours a hazy pale greenish yellow with a thick cream colored head that hangs around and leaves trails of lace.

Resinous pine, some citrus, and big dank hop in the nose.

Taste follows nose with some dry wood notes- oak and cedar.

16oz can into a pint glass. Best by 1/9/25

Mixed look here. Ugly murky dull peach colored body. Head retains in good form throughout leaving attractive lacing. Aroma is neutral. On tasting, there is an initial pleasing mixed fruit and berry wash. Unfortunately the finish is quite drying which makes the lasting bitterness come off a little harsh. There is a light warming from the abv.

Overall, not quite doing it for me. Troegs usually has generous best by dates, so this one may be a bit older than preferred.

Poured into a wide mouth grip shaped goblet: color is gold, murky hazy with off white head that presents one finger thick and dissipates to solid top with frothy lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is subdued - some biscuit, light citrus, some mint and berry.

Taste is biscuit, oats, pilsner malt, then citrus, berry, and herbal notes.

Mouthfeel is low/moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness.

Overall a lightly sweet but not cloying DHIPA - pleasant notes of biscuit and berry, hint of mint.

A - Pours an opaque dark golden tan color with super dense, rocky, sticky creamy foam for a head.

S - Chalky citrus aroma with berry.

T - Soft malt body that sets the stage for berry, citrus, and a slight bit of fruit rind spiciness.

M - Medium body with no carbonation and a little bit chewy.

O - Come to the conclusion that I'm not a fan of IPA's with berry nuances. (But glad to have tried this.)

On tap at The Sheffield in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a slightly hazy golden orange color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This smells moderately citrusy, some spicy and piney bitterness.

This is a pretty straightforward, but reasonably well done hazy-ish IPA. There’s some berry and lots of citrus flavors, not much in the way of maltiness, and a nice pleasantly clean bitterness.

This is light bodied, clean, crisp, and very smooth.

I don’t really like Sloop much anymore, but I can definitely get down with Troegs still. This was a nice little surprise.

Purchased at Pennridge Beverage, Perkasie, PA. 4pk/16oz cans

Pours a very hazy, semi-opaque, golden honey color. A frothy, white colored head (one finger) on the initial pour. Fades to a skin but leaves nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

Wonderful aromas of mango, pineapple, and other tropical fruits mixed with hoppiness.

An excellent IPA. Flavors of peach, mango, pineapple, lemon along with semi-bitter hops. Nice malty backbone rounds out this delicious IPA. Slightly bitter aftertaste. The ABV is well hidden.

Creamy, medium consistency with tiny bubble carbonation.

This is an excellent DIPA. Very smooth and very tasty. Definitely recommended…Cheers!

The pour to empty the entire contents of a pint can into a clear glass liter mug produced some excess foam. That's expected from an "IPA" that's heavy on the oat/wheat substitutes for barley malt. There are worse offenders. The brew is dull, cloudy and apricot-amber, to the darker side. The foam became an off-white head that carries a tint of the brew. It brings that fruity smell consistent with the style and muddled by starches. Although it misses a good malty balance, the hop profile is decent. It's dryly biting, maybe with some citrus and certainly some pine references. The mouthfeel is as good as expected, as the oats provide body and softness without being over used to the point of stickiness. The glass lacing adds a nice visual. Overall, this is well above average for the modern American IPA, bringing a West Coast hopping, although on the milder side, with the better attributes of the body of the good New England style hazies. Two good breweries equals one nice beer.
