As we emerge from nature’s slumber, Daylight Chaser is your sign that the equinox is near. This seasonal release starts with a complex toasty malt bill and dusky hue. Simcoe, Mosaic and Citra hops balance with radiant notes of blood orange and papaya. It’s a dark IPA yearning for the warm glow of longer days ahead.

Actually cant remember the last time I had a Black IPA into the glass its as advertised deep dark amber brown with some slight color to the base of the glass. Head is ample a two finger opaque froth pulling back to sticky lace ring. Subtle pine and orange rind in the nose a touch of roasted malt. Smells very inviting! Everything is pretty well represented the hop heads will be happy you can really taste the bitter pine and the malt body makes is slight coffee bitterness to a smooth finish.

Troegs embraces the dark side as they roll out a IPA that's anything but pale. The use of roasted grains gives us a reason to not be afraid of the dark.
Pouring a rather deep brown level of visual saturation, Daylight Chaser builds a creamy sandy froth with a scent of citrus, tropical fruit, charred spruce and background scents of coffee. Sweetness layers on the tongue with a blend of caramel and cocoa with a quick followup of slightly singed orange and grapefruit peels, hints of pineapple and passionfruit before a bitterness of spruce and coffee.
The black IPA is a fun beer and the combination of char and hops seem to elevate each to a world of bitterness that neither sees individually. Troegs' version is a seldom seen but welcomed session although it flirts heavily with becoming merely a hoppy porter.

Pours dark black/brown, yet still not blacked out. Head is slightly off white, but not quite tan. Nose is cocoa, but not full on chocolate. Taste is slightly malty with mild bitterness.

Translucent, deep brown. Muted aroma of earthy hops and notes of roast and chocolate. Malt seems to dominate the hops in this beer. Lightly roasty with touch of charr in the finish. Hops stay in the background. Appreciated this beer more than I enjoyed it.

From the spring mixed 12 pk. Let sit out at room temp (~60F) for awhile before opening.
Clear dark brown, with 2 fingers of light tan head.
Smell is grapefruit rind, other mixed citrus, light biscuity malt, faintest hint of fresh-cut scallions, and slight spiciness. I.e. smells like a typical IPA .
Taste is the aforementioned mixed citrus rind, light bock-like nuttiness, tiny bit of wood and char, brown bread, and a bit of hop spiciness at/near finish. Moderate bitterness.
Feel is medium, initially lightly creamy, with moderate carbonation tingle that gets lightly sharp from half-point to finish. Drying aftertaste.
Overall leans to the black IPA, but with modifications. Maybe if a bock or doppelbock was blended with a black IPA?
I like it. I'd definitely get this as a stand-alone.
PLEAseeee, Troegs ? :)

On tap.
Deep, dark brown color with a sticky head, clearly transparent when back lit.
Caramel, soot and pine pitch in the nose, sweet plum notes waft in and out.
Flavor has coco and roasted notes, mildly sweet but firm hop bitterness balances from the middle out.
Medium bodied with a lingering mocha -conifer aftertaste, highly drinkable with a reasonable abv.

Purchased at Bound Beverage, Warrington, PA. 6pk/12oz bottles
Pours a deep mahogany, brown color. Semi-translucent. A one-finger head on the initial pour that last quite awhile. Eventually fades to a skim. Curtains of lacing left on the glass.
Aromas of a traditional IPA with citrus.
A black IPA that is hard to distinguish from a traditional IPA. Flavors of lemon, pineapple and semi-bitter hops with a slight taste of sweet, roasted malts. Dry aftertaste. Highly drinkable. The ABV isn’t noticeable.
Medium consistency with mild carbonation.
Overall, in a blind taste test, I couldn’t tell this black IPA from a standard IPA. That isn’t a bad thing since it’s a very tasty IPA regardless. Cheers!

In the beginning, two brown twelve ounce bottles were emptied entirely into a clear glass liter mug. The pours produced a generous biege head, resting on top of a liquid brightly dark brown in color. It could almost pass for a cola soda. For an IPA, presumably with roasted malt, its aroma is noticeablely faint. Perhaps a little of the malt is detected over any hopping. There's a little more to taste, but it isn't much. It's remarkable how a brew so brown can have little malt taste. You'll not find anything from the hops to unbalance that. Nothing here is unpleasant. Unfortunately, there's not much there to make it so. It's a great example of what could make someone drink a dark ale that doesn't like them because of their taste. Trying this blind, you wouldn't know it's a dark IPA. At least, the taste that's there is true to the style. Its head mostly sustained, but there was little lacing left inside the glass. However, the mouthfeel is pleasant. Overall, it's a bit too mild to be disliked, nor loved. It would make a nice accompaniment to a meal, for sure; but, it's not a taste treat by itself. Accumulatively, some of the roasted malt and mild hopping become more apparent, so it isn't entirely devoid of taste.

Poured into a narrow imperial pint glass: color is dark brown, head is light tan with fine bubbles and presents at least one finger thick, head lingers well and laces the glass well.
Smell is forward hops with herbal and pine notes, lighter citrus with a pithy note, moderate roast and light base malt.
Taste is very bright hops with prominent pine, earth, herbal, and citrus notes; roasted malt, with light base malt.
Mouthfeel is low/moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness but maybe a bit light for the style.
Overall - great to see Troegs spinning up a style that should be explored more: the flavor is unique to this brew and exemplifies the style well.

Love Troegs, and Black IPAs/Cascadian Dark Ales, but this one was disappointing.
