Just in time for St. Patty’s Day, Scratch #89 represents a first for Tröegs – a traditional Irish Red Ale. With an emphasis on “traditional” yet still driven by our desire to experiment, we brewed our version of this classic style using a variety of specialty malts, giving the ale a surprisingly complex aroma and flavor. While dark beers are quite trendy around this time of year, our Red Ale is sure to provide you with a welcome alternative to the otherwise abundance of brown and black beers. Sweet and malty with just a touch of hop bitterness, we wouldn’t be surprised if this Red Ale actually brings out the green in you.

I got my growler filled of this on march 17th.
I poured this into a glass, it has a light reddish color body with a 2' tan head that hangs around for a little bit. The smell has a bready, toasted malt to it. The taste has a sweet malt, and a little bit of bitter, earthy hop to it. The malt defelntly is the backbone of this beer. The mouthfeel is very nice, leaves a little hop bitter aftertaste. Overall i think is a pretty good Irish red ale, i haven't had a lot of them to say if it excellent or bad,but i will defently keep trying them.

A - Pours amber red with a one and a half finger tall white head leaving spotty trails of lace down parts of the glass.
S - Smells of bready malt, mildly toasted caramel malt and some grassy hops. I was expecting more from this, it just never came into its own.
T - Starts off with nice caramel malt sweetness quickly giving way to some light grassy hop bitterness, toffee and a faint hint of spice. Some buttered toast flavor develops as it warms, it is not entirely off putting however. Finish is a touch sweet initially however it fades quickly leaving the palate dried long after the finish. The smooth feel helps keep things in check but overall it fails to grab my attention.
M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth feel with a nice hop bitterness backing. The booze is hidden well, only really coming forward at the end of the glass.
O - Not sure how to judge this one. It is honestly rather plain and unassuming, thats not to say it's bad because it isn't. It is nice to have a traditional scratch beer every now and then, I have just grown to love the more experimental Scratch Beers over the years.
