Fans of craft beer collaborations will be excited to learn that we’ve brewed another joint Scratch Beer venture with the Cleveland, OH-based Fat Head’s Brewery. This time, we’ve whipped up something John Trogner has dubbed “Second Hand Tropical Stout.” According to John, this sweet stout was brewed with brown sugar, chocolate, lactose, and toasted coconuts, the latter of which were added via our Infüz-O-Matic 5000. The impetus of the name “Second Hand” refers to a visit from Fat Head’s own Matt Cole to purchase some of our old equipment. While he was here, we decided to brew a beer with him. The result is a lush, full-bodied stout with plenty of rich malt sweetness and just enough fruit and coconut to capture the essence of the tropics. Just don’t attempt to go “two-fisted” with this one, as it weighs in at 8.4% ABV!

Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and vanilla cream. A small bit of alcohol lofts in with the smell of stout. In the taste, roasted malt, chocolate, and citrus. Perhaps a hint coconut. Nice balance. Finishes toasty and dark. Overall this is a nice stout.

Served on-tap at the brewery.
A - Pours pitch black with a nice one finger tall khaki colored head leaving small trails of lace down part of the glass.
S - Smells of dark roasted malt, milk chocolate, dulled toasted coconut, dark brown sugar and a touch of booze. A little slow to develop, I never really got a ton of coconut, but all in all a pretty nice nose.
T - Starts off with plenty of dark roasted malt slowly giving way to hints of chocolate and brown sugar sweetness, light toasted coconut and some lactose sugar. Finish is roasty with a touch of sweetness, lingering on the palate long after the finish. I was expecting a bit more coconut from this one.
M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, roasty feel that goes a little watery toward the end of the glass.
O - A nice attempt at a coconut stout. Nowhere near the best I have had but still a decent enough offering. Glad I got to try it while it lasted.

Enjoyed in the tasting room at the brewery as part of a round of latest scratches over 90 minutes.
It has a near ebony pour with red brown highlights. An ample head with nice retention floats evenly on top. Patchy lacing stays on the glass. Coconut mocha is the highlight of the nose, with a background of toasty malt--but more strength in this element would be nice. Sweetened espresso starts the taste, then bubbles infuse a little pineapple, thyme, and marjoram mid palate. Big malty chew dominates the rest of the way with alcoholic strength and belly warmth. Gooseberries dipped in creme de cacao emerge in the aftertaste. It has a good feel with some lingual stickiness. Balanced fairly well with carbonation. Not easy to drink but a good concoction.

M - Medium body and light medium carbonation. Slick, resinous but not real thick.
O - This collaboration with Fat Head's yielded an unusual but serviceable stout. Not as good as the previous Scratch #93 Impending Decent stout.

Appearance- pitch black body with a nice thick khaki tan head. Beautiful appearance !!
Smell- chocolate, coconut, mild coffee and some hints of pineapple. The smell of this beer is just down right awesome!! I can't stop smelling this beer it is just down right rich in aroma!
Taste - it does not disappoint it is very tropical fruit forward pineapple,toasted coconut some melon rinds and dank fruits with nice pushes flavors of coffee and milk chocolate you get some dark chocolate bitterness but it really works well with the beer!
Mouthfeel- very creamy and lushes mouthfeel just down right awesome!!! It's just a very smooth drinkable stout you get no hint of alcohol at all this is by far one of my favorite beers from troegs I would like to see them throw this in bourbon barrels and see what it will do!

Taste - it does not disappoint it is very tropical fruit forward pineapple,toasted coconut some melon rinds and dank fruits with nice pushes flavors of coffee and milk chocolate you get some dark chocolate bitterness but it really works well with the beer!
Mouthfeel- very creamy and lushes mouthfeel just down right awesome!!! It's just a very smooth drinkable stout you get no hint of alcohol at all this is by far one of my favorite beers from troegs I would like to see them throw this in bourbon barrels and see what it will do!
