Since the inception of our Scratch Beer series, some of the most heralded releases have been IPAs. Easily one of the most popular beer styles among craft beer drinkers, the IPA (India Pale Ale) has roots stretching back as far as the mid-19th century. Touted as a stronger, highly hopped version of a classic English Pale Ale, the style has mutated over the years, becoming arguably the benchmark beer style of the American craft beer movement. Until recently, IPAs have typically weighed in at around 6% ABV. However, with the advent of the “session IPA,” hopheads can still enjoy all of the aroma and flavor that have long since become hallmarks of the style without having to stop drinking after two or three. Aaaah, the session beer. What a beautiful invention!

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden. I thought I missed this one, glad I could try it during the Scratch Beer throw down.
A - Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a small half finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty lace down the glass.
S - Smells of dulled citric fruit zest, grassy hops, pine resin and light caramel malt sweetness. A little dull initially but it does get a little better as it warms up.
T - Starts off with some grassy hop bite quickly giving way to hints of pine, orange zest, some caramel sweetness and a bit of chewy malt. Finish is sweet with some light hop bitterness, not lingering on the palate for very long.
M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet grain and mild hop bitterness dominate the feel.
O - A decent enough session IPA. It has some nice flavors going for it but it isn't anything over the top. Glad I was able to finally try it after missing it initially. I would usually say you should give it a try but I doubt there are many kegs floating around at this point.

Draft offering at Als served in a tulip shaped pint glass. The brew pours a clear golden copper color with a fluffy white froth. It holds with a solid finger that slowly fades leaving patches of lace on the glass.
The smell is citrusy with rinds, fruit, zest and pith. A faint grain backing with plenty of enjoyable hoppy aromatics.
The taste is grainy like biscuits with a fresh sweetness. A lot of hop flavoring without much bitterness. It is grassy, fruity, rindy, herbal and zesty almost like grapefruit but with a floral aspect as well.
This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is better than I was expecting for this recent session ipa surge. Certainly worth checking out.

Had it at the Tröegs Brewing tasting room on tap last weekend and it was tasty. Pours clear yellow gold color with a foamy 1 finger snow white head that faded and left almost no lacing.
Smells of citrus hops, tangerine, piney hops, orange peel, light yeast, grains and some caramel; nose is on the simple side, but very fresh and inviting.
Tastes like it smells, with citrus hops, tangerine, lemon zest, grapefruit, piney hops, orange peel, light yeast, herbs, coriander, grains, caramel and some mild spices like pepper and a hint of brown sugar; not a hop bomb, but simple, tasty and extremely refreshing and sessionable.
Mouthfeel is very light, very crisp, and almost too thin yet so damn easy to drink, with mild carbonation and a light body; this is as light as an American Adjunct Lager with light IPA flavor.
This is a step below Founders All Day IPA and Lagunitas Daytime IPA, but is much easier to drink and hits the mark for the style. A new player in the session IPA field if Tröegs wants to keep this year round. Another good brew from these guys, well done Tröegs.

I drank this beer in the tasting room a week before entering this review, though I typed it out right away. Was not terribly surprised that no one else added it to BA...
It pours a light haze in mustard gold and carries a medium head with frost-like lacing. The look of this brew was my favorite component.
The bouquet is clean pine with heavy grapefruit accompaniment--nothing special, but hop-nosed.
Early spice notes in the taste profile go along with the citrus. Otherwise, though, it's rather hollow, mossy, and short. Chalk-stone covers most of the end and any aftertaste.
It has a dessicant mouthfeel with a sharp dance on the back of the tongue.
Overall, I'd say this beer is clunky. It's light enough to session, but I'd rather quaff something else.
