Scratch Beer historians might be surprised to learn that we’ve never, in fact, released a bona fide Abbey Dubbel. While we’ve released countless Belgian-style Brown ales over the years under the Scratch series, this offering is the first true representation of the style that originated in the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle during the mid-19th Century. The robust body and ample mouthfeel of Scratch #114 gives way to a pronounced dried fruit flavor and muted bitterness, releasing a prominent blend of sweet caramel and raisin notes paired with a subtle yet tangy alcohol bite. The addition of Westmalle yeast (a Trappist yeast strain) provides the authenticity of a true Belgian-style Abbey ale.

Had on tap at the Hudson Street Stackhouse (from notes).
A: Amber brown with lacing and a light head.
S: Sweet with the smell of ambrosia.
T: Malts all the way down. Eh, yeasty with a lot of bread.
M: Smooth.
O: Interesting, but overall quite regular.

A - Pours slightly hazy brown with a nice one finger tall off white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty trails of lace down the glass.
S - Smells of dark fruits like raisins and plums, some caramel and toffee sweetness from the malt, light fruitiness from the hops and the typical Belgian funk from the Westmalle yeast. Smells like a Dubbel.
T - Starts off with some nice caramel and toffee sweetness quickly giving way to the dark fruits, funky Belgian yeast and some light hop bitterness. Finish is sweet with a bit of booze burn, lingering on the palate long after the finish.
M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet, fruity feel with some light burn at the end of each sip.
O - A decent enough Dubbel. I can't really find a ton of faults with it, it just doesn't wow me in any way. Worth a shot if your into the style, just don't expect anything amazing here.

The beer itself is a clear amber with hints of brown. the head is tan and strong but does not last long.
Smell:
The beer has an overall fruity smell. Generally, dark fruits like plums and grape dominates the nose as well as malts. The smell has a a hints of hops to contrast the more sweet flavors.
Taste:
The fruit flavors such as plum and raising are forward. The hops are there but are barely noticeable. This dubbel is not as sweet or strong as other ones are but still manages to have some presence.
Mouthfeel:
Smooth with biting carbonation and medium to heavy bodied.
Overall:
A pretty good dubbel and I wish that it would more widely available outside of the brewery.
