The 10th entry in the eXile series, X-10: Saison brewed with cantaloupe, is medium-bodied, pale straw in color, and crisp on the tongue. Both flavor and aroma are dominated by cantaloupe backed by vibrant citrus fruit & subtle spicy flavors derived from a custom blend of Belgian yeast strains used in its creation, and balanced by a bready malt character and subtle hop bitterness that last through to the beer’s refreshing, dry finish. Kick back and “melo” out with X-10!

12oz bottle poured into a tulip
taken form notes-6/9/15
A- pours a clear pale straw color with a one-finger creamy white head that retains long after the pour, leaving some lace behind
S- the cantaloupe is quite prominent on the nose up front, adding a nice fruity sweetness. Classic underlying saison aromas of spicy & earthy yeast, clove, dried hay and light phenols
T- big refreshing blast of sweet cantaloup hits the palate up front, quickly followed by notes of spicy yeast, earthy straw, lemongrass and a fruity finish
M- medium body and carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel and a silky smooth finish, remarkably drinkable
O- this saison is so refreshing that I feel like I could drink a 6-pack in one setting, very well done

The Bottle Backlog continues to fall in the face of my ongoing, concerted efforts to winnow it down to either a) nothing or b) a low enough level that will allow me to return full-time to The CANQuest (tm).
From the bottle: "The 10th entry in the eXile series, this straw-colored saison is imbued with the vibrant fruit & subtle spicy flavors of a custom Belgian yeast blend and infused with sweet cantaloupe. Kick back, pop the top, and ... melo out!"; "Respect the Fluid"; "Craft Be Cherished. Rules Be Damned."
One thing that I do not require is advice in Pop!ping the top on these bottles. I have been going with a gentle pour since some of these bottles are old and I don't want to rouse the lees unnecessarily. I still got a finger of foamy, bone-white head with good retention in spite of this. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with a slight haze that just could not be helped. Nose had the slightly musky, fishy smell of cantaloupe! I get the same scent from mango on occasion. Definitely a fruity, musty odor and one that can go a long way for me, which is why I not a huge fan of saisons. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium. The taste was like I had just cut open a fresh cantaloupe for breakfast! It was initially quite sweet, then the yeast began to exert its spiciness to keep things in check. Finish was semi-dry, believe it or not, as though the cantaloupe was working to keep the yeast in check. Check? Put this in a CAN and I am there during the summer!

Distributor was selling for 70% off. I thought this would be terrible. It is not. Very light canteloupe taste, but it is there. Not a bad option for a summer-time beer. I will likely pick up some more of this next summer.

Has a very bubbly front with a nice cantaloupe finish. It actually has a surprisingly large amount of cantaloupe taste and is very unique. Definitely an above average beer.

-spiegelau ipa glass. Saison ale brewed with canteloupe. Bot. 04.07.15. Consumed 08.01.15.
A: Pale lemonade coloring with a good haze and vibrant show of carbonation. Monstrous mushrooming chalk white head breaches the rim with a sturdy rate of retention. Thick saturn like ring lacing down the vessel.
S: Spicy funk of belgian yeast and fresh, breakfast canteloupe. Green melon, moist bread, and apple cider. Really like the belgian yeast funk, and fruity canteloupe which sets it apart. Nicely different.
T: Cantaloupe, fruity, fresh and wet, with background nuances of tart apple cider. Green melon, grapefruit with dank herbal notes. Wheat with a soft spicy lemon peel and orange touch.
M: Crisp, bready mouthful, tart and spicy, medium fullness, all good qualities per style.
O: Sure it sounds gimmicky, and I've been duped by more then one of duclaw's unique offerings, but this one they pulled off. A good farmhouse should have a distinct funky fruitiness, and this is unique and fits the bill. Funky, fruity, fresh and wet cantaloupe combines with the zing of the belgian yeast. Good carbonation factor, crisp with an easy drinkability. Worthy for its unique cantaloupe attributes which really works here.
