A holdover from this past Winter, I found this CAN in my reefer & I wanted to review it today, even if it is not seasonally appropriate. Such are the trials and tribulations of The CANQuest (tm).
From the CAN: "The Place Where We Drink"; "Every year around the holidays the fragrance of whole cardamom and brown sugar fill the air at the Manayunk Brewing Company. This can only mean that Festivus is upon us. The rich plum and raisin flavors are certainly a feat of strength while the complex spice profile shouldn't be included in anyone's airing of grievances."; "Unfiltered Keep Refrigerated Please Recycle".
As to that last part, I usually let fly with an inverted Glug following the Crack! of the vent, but in this case, I restrained myself simply because I wanted to see if any clarity had resulted in the passing of the past months. My efforts paid off as it poured as a Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. An in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention that left nice lacing in its wake. Nose had a pronounced spiciness, in total reminding me of spice cake, which I really used to like as a kid. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very spicy, but I am not sure that I would have identified it as cardamom. The brown sugar was also evident, but not really sweet. It had mellowed nicely with the elapsed time & become intertwined with the spice. Finish was dry and spicy, but definitely much more appropriate during the winter months.

Manayunk Brewing Co. "Festivus Ale"
12 fl. oz. can, no freshness dating
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA
Look: Hazy mahogany brown beneath a frothy light tan head. The head retention is good and the lacing is better than average.
Smell: Caramelish with brown sugar and earthy spice.
Taste: As the aroma suggests with a little nuttiness, a light touch of chocolate, and some dark fruit. The spice is mild; and works well with the malt lending it a light touch of a cola-like flavor. It's mildly bitter as that's all that's needed, and it finishes dry with a mildly lingering note of cardamom.
Feel: Medium-light in body with a smooth, moderate carbonation.
Overall: A tasty treat that's well suited to the season without going overboard. It's charming, unique, and quite drinkable.
