Our complex American sour ale, Rye Ask Rye, is brimming with fruity and spicy rye malt which helps tame the earthy Brett funk. Cloaked within the lactic sourness are notes of dark cherry, clove and black pepper. After you try it, you will know Rye we never Ask Rye.

Now this is a true session beer. Not because it has an ABV below 5%, because it came in a 750 milliliter bottle. Brown bottle popped open and the first noticeable thing is a strong sour and grassy aroma. Now that it's been poured into a clear pint glass, a nearly crystal clear light and shiny copper colored liquid is observed. There's abundant carbonation, yet no head nor glass lacing. This is one unique concoction, as rye seems to be included nearly exclusively in IPAs and stouts. The worst aspect of this beverage is the thin body. Even sufficient carbonation can't rescue that. Also learned is that rye makes a great complimentary addition, it doesn't carry this style by itself very well. The good things start with the way this nails a sour. This isn't tart, it's sour and doesn't bring subsidiary sweetness. This is a very true sour. Also, the 7.7% ABV, elevated for the style, is barely noticed. The unfairness in this review is that compared with ales other than sours, the body falls short. Among its peers, this is at least average, or better. Overall this is a very good natural sour, with the rye adding just a little extra dimension to an ordinary wild sour and a wonderful diversion from sours that rely on fruit.

Poured from a bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Cloudy golden pour with a finger of fluffy white head. Falls fast... decent lacing.

S: Tart and fruity... oak, rye, and spice.

T.F: Tart but not overly sour... some sweet fruit character and brett funk. Pepper, lemon peel, rye, and spice. Earth and barnyard. Some white wine and oak. Effervescent carbonation. Funk and spice to finish.

O: A decent brett sour. Easy drinking... complex and tasty.
