First had: on tap at Hop Angel Brauhaus, Philly, PA

Now this was good. Hopefully an indication that Manayunk Brewery is improving their brewing.

Poured a clear, dark brown with little to no head. Lots of spice in the aroma, and a bit medicinal from the alcohol; some dried fruits coming through. Intense with dried fruit flavor, cloves and allspice, and the general bite of a Belgian dubbel or strong ale. Some of the medicinal quality carries through in the taste, and leaves a dry bitterness in the mouth, but not in a bad way. Heavy-medium mouthfeel, and can leave a bit of film in the mouth. Strong, but very drinkable.

Tried this on tap tonight at the Spinnertown Hotel. I was honestly surprised (mistakenly) to see a belgian style from Manayunk brewery.

A - Dark brown almost black color with a 1.5 finger head. Receded to about a 1/2 half inch and left nice rings of lacing. Good so far.

S - Spicy and phenolic with cloves and slightly medicinal. Undertones of sweet dark fruits. Very appealing so far, doesn't remind me of the overly sweet American "quad" offerings I've seen so far.

T - Big spicy belgian notes at the front. Eases into being highly phenolic mid-palate, cloves and band-aids (mmm, band-aids). Possibly some bubblegum there as well. Finishes with bitter, dry tannins. Balanced fairly well.

M - Medium bodied and carbonation is spot on for the style. Not fizzy but strong enough for the spicy notes present here. Bitter tannins linger, possibly a bit too long.

D - This was a pleasant surprise but lacked the dark fruits (fig, dates) present in trappist offerings. Consequently, the abv is hidden wonderfully behind those big flavors that are present. A fantastic way to finish out the night.
