500 ml bottle served fairly cold into a tulip. Purchased from the LCBO for around $5.95 CDN.

Appearance - Super dark brown in color, appears black once in the glass. Capped by a glorious, rocky, two finger dark tan colored head. Modest lacing after a lengthy stay.

Smell - Dark chocolate, a subtle hint of coffee and vanilla. Molasses and possibly some licorice. Not a smell but has that rich and creamy feel to the nose which is hopefully a precursor to the taste. Burnt brown sugar appears after some warming / indulging.

Taste - Again a combination of chocolate and coffee. Some faint molasses in there with some earthy bitter hops, although the bitterness is restrained. Little dribs and drabs of caramel sweetness and the faintest kiss of cherry.

Mouthfeel -Liquid velvet. Super smooth and fairly full bodied although perhaps a touch thinner than expected. Carbonation is just right and easy to drink. Definitely feels like 8% ABV or so beer with some heat rising in the back of the throat.

Overall - Stone Hammer's Continuity is a very nice offering in this semi uncommon style. Always a brewery with good products, Continuity has raised the bar. I'm certainly looking forward to trying another of this and hope that this is the beginning of a trend, more Ontario craft breweries making Baltic Porters.

Beautiful ebony black with a head that could be mistaken for the brown foam around the edges of a cappuccino. Nice lacing at the start.

Smells of coffee, leather, black liquorice, and the dark english christmas fruit cake.

Taste is rich coffee and vanilla chocolate, later on a burnt sugar sweetness is present before the final bitter ending with tobacco, earthy woody hopps and the blackest pumpernickle bread you could imagine - like a black volkornbrot if you've ever had it. Fantastic. A light carbonation and a slight syrupy texture. Alcohol warming is present in a welcoming way.

Very flavourful and with nice complexity. Continuity, the endless chain, you will want to open the next bottle before you finish the first.

500 mL bottle from the brewery; served at cellar temperature. No bottling date. Haven't had a Baltic porter in years now.

Pours an opaque, blackish-brown cola colour, stirring up a half-finger of dense, light beige-tinged head that quickly wilts. A thin, foamy collar remains on the surface, rimming a paper-thin cap; nothing to get excited about visually. Coffee grounds, treacle, caramel, light smoke and canned peas on the nose; the latter note was really concentrated when I first cracked open the bottle, but faded as the glass had time to breathe. Faint hints of chocolate, licorice and plum.

A fine porter; very well-balanced. Caramel and molasses sweetness blend beautifully with the notes of sweet chocolate and coffee that are imparted by the roasted malts. Faint suggestions of plum, black cherry and smoke; the finish becomes increasingly dirty, with just a touch of licorice. Bittersweet aftertaste of coffee, chocolate and herbal hops that doesn't linger more than a few seconds. On the more viscous side of medium-bodied, with light carbonation levels that gently nudge the palate; extremely smooth and silky, and relatively soft-feeling. No sign of the 7.8% alcohol whatsoever - it's masterfully integrated, making this one of the more dangerous beers I've had as of late.

Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Stone Hammer's Continuity is one damn fine strong porter. Given that I have very little experience with this style, I am probably not the best candidate to judge whether or not this is a good Baltic-style porter - but I knows what I likes, and am unable to come up with any serious objections to this beer. It is incredibly smooth, and much more drinkable than a beer of its abv has any right to be. I suppose the flavour could use some more complexity, but that's neither here nor there - this is still a really nice porter that I'd happily recommend to others. If you're in Guelph and stopping by the brewery, be sure to grab a bottle or two of this.
