On tap at the Only Cafe. Minimally drinkable and minimal hops. unoffensive ale. Light amber colour. Boring and somewhat disappointed. Middling mouthfeel.

Tallboy picked up at the brewery in February; best before Jun 3 2016 and served well-chilled.

Pours a clear orange-amber colour, capped with a centimetre of soapy froth that swiftly diminishes. No lacing is produced; a foamy collar is the only remnant. I'm mostly getting doughy bread, biscuit and some nuttiness on the nose, with light brown sugar sweetness. Hints of marmalade and cantaloupe.

Palatable, but not too interesting. Good malt backing; bready, doughy, biscuity malts come through initially, while notes of caramel and brown sugar sweetness continue on throughout the profile. They are joined by an earthy, somewhat leafy hop bitterness in the latter half of the sip, with just a hint of citrus rind. Bittersweet finish with a minerally note. Light-medium in body, with restrained carbonation that results in a largely soft, smooth mouthfeel. I'm giving it a few bonus points for being extremely drinkable and potentially sessionable.

Final Grade: 3.5, eking out a B. Stone Hammer describes their Premium Pale Ale as an APA, but I think it falls into more of a grey area between that and an English-style pale ale or bitter. While I find this to be a reasonably enjoyable beer that goes down without a fuss, it is not a very interesting one. I enjoy the malt backbone, but the hop profile doesn't do much for me. Give it a look if you're curious, but I wouldn't expect too much - I'm not exactly in a hurry to buy more, but I'd give it another chance if I knew the can was fresh.
