A sophisticated, malt-forward beer featuring toffee, biscuit and malt sweetness accented by subtly herbal English hops that finishes with a slightly roasted dryness. Complex and memorable yet clean and smooth, Copper Beech Red Ale is a truly unique and satisfying sip.

Appearance: Poured with a mere half a finger of head, which pretty much guaranteed lacing and retention wasn't going to occur. The body is a very deep copper, but with a crimson hue, and it's so dark that you only see shadows of your hand as you look through the body. Not at lot of carbonation is to be found here.

Smell: Mild caramel malt with an earthy undertone, but even after ample warming, the potency simple isn't there. There's nothing wrong here, it's just sedate.

Taste: Toffee malt that increases in potency as more biscuity notes back it up before the beer turns to earth and herbal hopping. It's a beer whose appeal is it's simplicity. There's no bells and whistles here, just a solid red ale.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is incredibly lacking, the lack of head and that it just doesn't seem to be there to contribute makes this beer come across and watered down. The transitioning is good, but it's not a complex affair. The place where it does come out is in the aftertaste as a very mild dryness paired with toffee does a great job there.

Drinkability: Easy to drink, despite the medium body, but very sedate which isn't something I expect from a style that wants to express it's malt. I can see this working well in the summer, after wheat beer and more typical lager has run it's course.

Final Thoughts: The one word that sums up this beer is sedate. I'd say this might be a replacement for Rickard's Red, but it's not as potent or interesting, and that's a problem. Again, the only time I'd want this, is in the summer as it comes across as too watered down for a style that is supposed to have a bit more character. It's not bad, it's just there's far more interesting things to drink. You'll likely want to pass on this one.
