Match Point was started by a couple of tennis players who were also home brewers. When they have a good recipe, they bring it to nearby Epidemic Ales where it is brewed and canned or kegged. A convenient and smart relationship for a startup and nano.
When I visited, they had Tennis Channel on the Big Screen. (Full disclosure, I used to be more serious about tennis than beer.) Other than that, the Vibe is no big deal. Match Point took over this space from a previous bar called Albany Tap. Easy and less costly than to build a bar from scratch; also smart for a startup of only 18 months to invest in big shiny vessels.
While the bar lacks character, the quality of the brews is potentially high because of both skill and creative blending of ingredients. I've had four brews from Match Point and all of them were subtle and good. To me, a welcome niche in the craft community that competes for extreme way too much.
Service was very good because I was chatting with one of the owners, informative and dedicated to the craft.
I also give very good points for Selection because Match Point only has about seven brews of their own. Yet 4 ciders (all from outside) were explained on their menu and about 8 brews from other brewers, also sort of curated on the menu.
Only four Match Point brews are canned and they are not easy to find. So stop by and taste what I mean about brewing creativity and subtlety. Become part of the moderating movement !
