"Straw yellow beer with aromas of honey and cooked agave. On the palate, pronounced agave notes and a subtle resinous sweetness are perceived. The tequila is present in the aftertaste."
Pairing: Mexican snacks.

Mestiza is interesting and hard to cubby-hole.
Agave is an alternative sweetener; so it inevitably produces a sweet ale. Agave also is an alternative soothing agent; and Mestiza is a soothing ale, strong and effective @ 8.2% ABV without hitting you over the head. Agave also is important to the desert and Mexican culture; so I've found several agave ales among Mexican micros. And don't forget, tequila is distilled agave.
With that windup, Mestiza still only Looks slightly better than the average Amber ale (Mestiza needs more foam.) Not surprising, it Smells mostly of sweet malt. Tastes are balanced and I only can presume that some bitter hops are checking the sweet. Mestiza is just short of medium-mouthed in a style that is more bubbly.
To Colombo, I give very good Overall Hugs for at least a couple of reasons. First, they started in 2011 and have evolved from pioneer to a successful business by focussing on only a few brews. (UnTappd lists 35 brews and Mestiza is the 3rd most rated.) A second important reason is that Colombo also has a gastropub, Zaptolense, and they brew for that elaborate menu. They are opening a second gastropub that, I suspect, also has a creative menu.
