1995 vintage shard by Stakem. Thanks man!

Orange body, mild haze, thin off-white cap. Aromas of musty basement funk, apple, pear, age, booze. Sweet, ripe pear. Low carb, light oxidation. Fun.

This is the 1995 vintage brewed for the restaurant Loch Ness. Perhaps one of if not the most playful and entertaining labels I have ever seen on a bottle of beer. (Cartoon Loch Ness fishing.) The cork comes out solid with a hiss of carbonation. Poured into a pair of matching Fantome tulips and shared with my beer brethren BdubleEdubleRUN. The brew appears a clear copper color with a thin ring of bubbles that holds around the perimeter.

The smell contains a striking amount of candy sweetness. Excessively malty with a mild papery oxidation playing off some dark fruited aspect with a fruity fusel alcohol inclusion.

The taste is fruity bordering on a sort of belgian candy aspect but there is an underlying complex fruit note that is a derivative of the combination of faded hops and alcohol. Some paper notes of oxidation are present but by no means distracting. Plenty of caramel and a warming alcohol hint. As it warms up, it feels almost like that complex fruit character could be currents.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a light amount of carbonation. It is surprisingly warming and sweet. Even by Fantome standards this is a truely unique beast. To try and stylistically categorize this, it feels more like a belgian old ale or belgo barleywine of sorts. Compared to other beer of this time period, this is outstanding.
