Beer brewed for Norway. An excelent farmhouse ale from Fantome which has been generously hopped and dryhopped to satisfy all the Norwegian hop heads. We like to call it an India Red Ale, but most of all it is a Fantôme. There are only 1200 bottles made so don’t be so cheap and drink it all by yourself, but share something with someone you care for! There are rumours going on that the brewery will send a signed bottle to the guy with the most awesome Fantôme India Red Ale Picture. Simply hashtag #FantomeIRA on Instagram or Facebook.

Bottle pour into a tulip glass.
Copper red color with fizzy head. Nose is pine and musty. Taste is pine, funk, horse blanket. Mouthfeel is moderate body and balanced carbonation.

Bottle into a matching Fantome tulip appears clear copper with a white head that holds well with patches of lace.

This brew is roughly 3.5 years old and it still smells hoppy with pine, grapefruit pith/pulp and herbs with a toasty bread malt backdrop.

Taste is super dry and bitter with an oily pine resin-like cling tasting of grapefruit and orange rinds with slight toasty grain backing like the nose indicated. There is a bit of solvent alcohol aspect to this as well.

Medium in body with modest carbonation. This is pretty much exactly what I was expecting - a super bitter fantome in the realm of what im not crazy about. I only ever bought one of these and waited till now hoping the bitterness i heard it had would fade a bit. Maybe it did but its still harsh. Color me surprised it still smells hoppy after 3 and a half years in the bottle.

A 750ml green glass bottle with a BB of End 2018 (bottled 2014?). Purchased ages ago from the Brewdog webshop and stored in a box. Sealed with a crown and cork. I have a feeling this won't be so great, but here goes....

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned and a bit of a gusher. A deep marmalade-orange hue with intense carbonation and tons of chunky floating sediment. Produces an enormous head of creamy white foam that lasts for a while before slowly subsiding to a patchy surface layer.

S: Aroma of earthy yeast with hints of mild funk, oxidised hops, mustiness, faint sourness, vague malt and a touch of dried fruit. Underwhelming and stale, which isn't a surprise.

T: Tastes of musty, earthy yeast with notes of subtle funk, oxidation, stale hops, harsh leafiness, vague malt and wet cardboard. Very dry, followed by an acrid leafy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with lively carbonation and good body. Pretty astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of earthy yeast, mustiness, funk, stale leafy hops and subtle malt.

O: Hmmm - past its best. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are very yeasty with stale hops and faint malt presence. Body is decent. I suspect this would have aged better if it weren't for the hops - without the bitterness this might have been quite drinkable. My fault for not getting to it sooner....

I like this a lot. Not super funky, very bitter to double ipa level, nice hop character, moderate maltiness but not sweet. Yeast/funk pretty subdued for a Fantome.
