Smoked Dark Lager
The inspiration for Nathan’s My Turn™ hit him while drinking an Eastside Dark™ around a campfire. This dark, caramelly German-style lager has just enough smoked malt to give it an interesting depth, but still finishes crisp.

Pours a soapy, tan head. The amazing sting of smoke in the nose. Burnt umber color. Starts with a fantastic, rich smokiness that lingers. As the smoke dissipates, there is an effervescent sting of acidity as the toasted malt peeks though.
This is lovely. One of the best Rauchbiers made in the US of A.

Poured chilled into a Perfect Pint and let warm up to about 50º.
Look: Rich, dark, brownish red with an ample head that lasted around a minute.
Smell: Aroma of smoked ham combined with bread...more towards rye bread; hint of cinnamon.
Taste: Smoked ham with a sweetness, similar to molasses or brown sugar...hint of cola. Reminds me of German beers I drank in college at Essen Haus...very robust. May be too strong in flavor for those that prefer traditional lagers.
Feel: Moderate body and low in carbonation...if anything, could use a tad more body.
Overall: I definitely would love to try this on tap and hope that Lakefront adds this to their seasonal rotation in the late fall/early winter. I paired with grilled steak and it complimented it rather well. It feels like you should be drinking this near a roaring fireplace in a northwoods cabin on a snowy night.

On-tap @ Sol Mexican Cantina in Branchburg, NJ.
Served in a pint glass, it arrives deep amber, almost Brown in color and clear. A small head quickly fades to a thin film on top.
Straight up smoked ham in the nose. A little further searching reveals a caramel malt base. Flavor is all smoke and malt, as it should be. No hops, no yeast.
Medium bodied and the smoke never becomes too abrasive. There's restraint here, and the beer has clearly been lagered properly; both a credit to the brewer.
The smoke is fairly subdued if you're comparing it to a Schlenkerla rauchbier. That being said, it's a very well-made version of the style. I'd order it again if I saw it on tap.
